Το πιο ξεχασμένο άλμπουμ τους

Η περίοδός μετά το άλμπουμ Black Rose είναι η πιο μυστικιστική για τους Ιρλανδούς heavy rockers, με τον μιγά ηγέτη, μπασίστα και τραγουδιστή. Το εξώφυλλο φέρει τη σημαία της Λαϊκής Δημοκρατίας του Βιετνάμ, μπροστά από ένα μαύρο σύννεφο που μοιάζει με πανί! Πολιτική πρόθεση; Άγνωστο. Όμως, ο "αποστάτης", όπως μεταφράζεται ο τίτλος στα ελληνικά, είναι το πρώτο αρκετά βαρύ (θεωρητικά) άλμπουμ τους στη νέα τότε δεκαετία. Ο τεράστιος με το αφρομαλλί Phil Lynott, μαζί με τους Scott Gorham (ο οποίος, βέβαια, δεν ήταν Ιρλανδός αλλά Αμερικανός), Brian Downey και τον νεοφερμένο Snowy White, σε ένα κατά τα άλλα "προβληματικό" άλμπουμ για τους παλιότερους και αρχικούς φίλους του σχήματος. Και εξηγούμαι άμεσα: Το πρώτο τρανταχτό παράδειγμα που πάντα θυμάμαι είναι το εναρκτήριο "Angel of Death". Το ομώνυμο "Renegade" που ακολουθεί είναι... ιδιαίτερο κομμάτι, σχεδόν country με rock ξεσπάσματα, κάτι που το είχαν κάνει και στο παρελθόν, π.χ. με το "Cowboy Song". Μετά, στο "The Pressure Will Blow", συνεχίζουν σε αυτό το ιδιαίτερα μελωδικό, riff-oriented heavy rock που ξέρουμε. Είναι, σοβαρά, τα τρία βαρύτερα εναρκτήρια τραγούδια σε δίσκο τους από την εποχή του δίσκου Jailbreak! Η συνέχεια κρύβει τα "Leave This Town", "Hollywood", "No One Told Him", "Mexican Blood", "It's Getting Dangerous", οπότε έχουμε στο στερεοφωνικό μας τον πρώτο δίσκο τους με καθαρά NWOBHM επιρροές! Ναι, το νέο τότε heavy metal ρεύμα στη Μ. Βρετανία φιλτράρεται εδώ μέσα μέσα από τις δικές τους επιρροές, και έχει σαν αποτέλεσμα αυτό που ακούμε!

Their Most Forgotten Album

The period after the Black Rose album is the most mystical for the Irish heavy rockers, led by their mixed-heritage frontman, bassist, and vocalist. The album cover features the flag of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam in front of a black cloud that looks like a piece of cloth! Political intent? Unknown. However, the "renegade," as the title translates into Greek, is their first quite heavy (theoretically) album of that new decade. The towering figure with afro hair, Phil Lynott, along with Scott Gorham (who, of course, was not Irish but American), Brian Downey, and the newcomer Snowy White, on an otherwise "problematic" album for the band’s older and original fans. And I’ll clarify immediately: the first striking example I always remember is the opening track, "Angel of Death." The eponymous "Renegade" that follows is... a special piece, almost country with rock outbursts—something they had done before, for example, with "Cowboy Song." Then, on "The Pressure Will Blow," they continue with this very melodic, riff-oriented heavy rock that we know. Honestly, these are the three heaviest opening tracks in their discography since the Jailbreak album! The rest includes "Leave This Town," "Hollywood," "No One Told Him," "Mexican Blood," "It's Getting Dangerous," so on our stereo, we have their first album clearly influenced by NWOBHM! Yes, the then-new heavy metal wave in Britain is filtered through their influences, resulting in what we are listening to now.
