Οι Σουηδοί περιπλανιούνταν στα σκοτεινά, εφιαλτικά και παράξενα σοκάκια του ακραίου metal ήδη από τις απαρχές της δεκαετίας. Ειδικά στο δεύτερο άλμπουμ τους, The Jester Race, έσπασαν τα στεγανά του death metal, εισάγοντας περισσότερα μελωδικά στοιχεία, παρμένα από το κλασικό heavy metal αλλά και από νεοκλασικής έμπνευσης μελωδίες.

Μετά ήρθε κι αυτό εδώ το CD και ισοπέδωσε οτιδήποτε είχε απομείνει. Μελωδικό death metal σουηδικής κατασκευής λοιπόν, με το «μελωδικό» να υπονοεί ότι, αν τα φωνητικά δεν ήταν growl, θα το έλεγες σκέτο heavy metal. Είναι η εποχή που το είδος απογειώνεται στην Ευρώπη, τόσο στον Βορρά όσο και στον Νότο, εξαιτίας όχι μόνο του συγκεκριμένου άλμπουμ αλλά και των προσπαθειών των Arch Enemy, Amon Amarth, Hypocrisy — όλων από τη Σουηδία.

Οι πέντε μουσικοί, μέσα από κομμάτια που άφησαν το στίγμα τους — όπως τα Jotun, Food for the Gods, Gyroscope, το ορχηστρικό Dialogue With the Stars, The Hive, Morphing Into Primal, Jester Script Transfigured, Episode 666, Everything Counts, Whoracle — μας αφήνουν μια υπόσχεση για το μέλλον, την οποία και κράτησαν.

Revelation, back then.

The Swedes had already been wandering through the dark, nightmarish and twisted alleyways of extreme metal since the early years of the decade. Especially with their second album, The Jester Race, they broke through the confines of death metal, introducing far more melodic elements drawn from classic heavy metal and even melodies of neoclassical inspiration.

Then came this CD, and it flattened whatever was left standing. Melodic death metal of unmistakably Swedish make — with “melodic” implying that, if the vocals weren’t growled, you could easily call it straight heavy metal. It was the era when the genre was taking off across Europe, both North and South, thanks not only to this particular album but also to the efforts of Arch Enemy, Amon Amarth, Hypocrisy — all of them Swedish.

Through tracks that left a lasting mark — Jotun, Food for the Gods, Gyroscope, the orchestral Dialogue With the Stars, The Hive, Morphing Into Primal, Jester Script Transfigured, Episode 666, Everything Counts, Whoracle — the five musicians offered a promise for the future, and they kept it.
