REVIEW: AMETHYST – The Maze of Destiny

AMETHYST – The Maze of Destiny

Retrospect Records

Formed in Kansas City in 1986, AMETHYST recorded the tracks comprising The Maze of Destiny between 1990 and 1992. It is important to distinguish this band from the other U.S. band also named AMETHYST, which released the now highly sought-after EP Outside of Nowhere in 1984.

Musically, AMETHYST is heavily influenced by the melodic power metal sound of the 1980s, with a pronounced QUEENSRŸCHE influence that is unmistakable throughout this release. The band’s sound features clear, soaring vocals complemented by first-class musicianship, resulting in a polished and cohesive album.

The Maze of Destiny is being issued on CD for the first time, offering audiences the opportunity to experience tracks that have become classics within their genre. Notable songs include "Abstract of Mind," "Executor," "Mirrored Sky," "The Last Prophecy," and "The Trespasser." These compositions exemplify the band’s melodic power metal style and are highly recommended for fans of 1980s American power metal.

While the album's primary appeal lies with enthusiasts of the genre, it also warrants attention from a broader audience interested in the melodic metal scene of the era. Overall, The Maze of Destiny stands as a solid and influential release that merits exploration by both dedicated fans and newcomers alike.
