Η επανεφεύρεση του Hard and Heavy ήχου

Οι Δανοί βρίσκονται εδώ, στο τρίτο άλμπουμ της καριέρας τους, και παράλληλα σε ένα σταυροδρόμι. Ο πιο μεταλλικός ήχος του Future World προηγουμένως, υποχωρεί προς τον αμερικανικό Heavy Rock ήχο συγκροτημάτων της εποχής. Είναι και η αυγή της νέας τότε δεκαετίας. Η παραγωγή του Roger Glover (μπασίστας των Deep Purple και Rainbow) είναι πιο ραδιοφωνική, οπότε η μετακίνηση προς πιο εμπορικό ήχο δεν κρύβεται.

Τώρα, για κάποιο λόγο, έχω πάθει σύνδρομο Μαντέλα με αυτόν τον δίσκο: Είχε κυκλοφορήσει με το όνομα Lethal Heroes ως βινύλιο, ή έτσι νομίζω; Το θυμάμαι καθαρά σαν L.P. με το ίδιο εξώφυλλο, αλλά με τίτλο Lethal Heroes, και το κομμάτι με τον τίτλο αυτό κάνει μια πολύ καλή αρχή, ακολουθεί το Don't Settle for Less και το γρήγορο Rock the House.

Η μπαλάντα Savage Heart, που ακολουθεί, έχει σίγουρα στόχο το αμερικανικό ραδιόφωνο. Πιο πολλά πλήκτρα και ίσως πιο light ατμόσφαιρα, αλλά τα Young Blood, Jump the Gun, Partners in Crime (τα λες και κομμάτια που βγήκαν από το πρώτο τους άλμπουμ), το Attention, η διασκευή στο Hung Tough των Icon και το Over and Out είναι οι πιο καλές στιγμές αυτού του... μάλλον οριακά απογοητευτικού δίσκου, τουλάχιστον σε σύγκριση με τα δύο προηγούμενα τους.

Αυτό είναι το δικό μου συμπέρασμα. Το συγκρότημα, πάντως, είχε ακόμα πιο εμπορική πορεία στην απέναντι ακτή του Ατλαντικού, στη μετέπειτα πορεία του, οπότε θα αλλάξει ακόμα περισσότερο το ύφος του, σε σημείο που αρκετοί να νομίζουν ότι ήταν από το Λος Άντζελες και όχι από την Κοπεγχάγη!

The Reinvention of the Hard and Heavy Sound

The Danes are here, at their third album in their career, and at a crossroads. The heavier, more metallic sound of Future World previously, is now retreating toward the American Heavy Rock style of bands from that era. It’s also the dawn of a new decade. Roger Glover’s production (bassist of Deep Purple and Rainbow) is more radio-friendly, so the shift toward a more commercial sound is obvious.

Now, for some reason, I’ve developed a Mandela syndrome with this album: It was released under the name Lethal Heroes on vinyl, or so I think? I remember it clearly as an LP with the same cover art but titled Lethal Heroes, and the track with that name makes a very strong opening. It’s followed by Don’t Settle for Less and the fast-paced Rock the House.

The ballad Savage Heart, which comes next, is definitely aimed at the American radio market. It features more keyboards and maybe a lighter atmosphere, but tracks like Young Blood, Jump the Gun, Partners in Crime (which could have come straight from their first album), Attention, the cover of Hung Tough by Icon, and Over and Out are the album’s standout moments. However, overall, it’s probably a somewhat disappointing record—at least when compared to their previous two albums.

That’s my conclusion. The band, however, continued to have a more commercial trajectory on the other side of the Atlantic, and in their later career, they would change their style even more—so much so that many would think they were from Los Angeles, not Copenhagen!
