PARADISE LOST, Symbol Of Life (2002)

Ηλεκτρονική γοτθική ατμόσφαιρα.

Το φως αρχίζει να φαίνεται στο τούνελ, μαζί με τις φυσικές ηλεκτρικές κιθάρες πλέον. Η επιστροφή είχε σημάνει άνοδο για τους απογοητευμένους φίλους τους, με το Believe in Nothing ένα χρόνο πριν. Το συγκεκριμένο είναι η συνέχεια του, στο βαρύτερο στυλ, αλλά ακόμα θέλουν "δουλίτσα" για να επαναφέρουν εαυτούς στις προ-πτώσης εποχές. 

Είναι καθαρό ηλεκτρονικό gothic rock; Είναι σκέτο gothic rock; Πάντως, οι Άγγλοι δείχνουν να πήραν το μήνυμα. Καταρχάς, γιατί ενώνουν το όνομά τους σε μία λέξη, ήδη από το 2000; Ήθελαν να διαφοροποιηθεί η προηγούμενη μεταλλική καριέρα τους από το νέο στυλ και ύφος; 

Πολλά τα ερωτήματα. Η μουσική εδώ παραμένει... πολύ μοντέρνα για τα γούστα μου, αλλά έχει να πει και κάτι σε ορισμένα σημεία. Τα δύο πρώτα κομμάτια, Isolate και ειδικά το Erased, είναι το καλύτερο μπάσιμο. Πολλά samples, συνθεσάιζερ, αλλά και παρακάτω κιθάρες πολύ βαριές στα Pray Nightfall, Primal, Perfect Mask, Self Obsessed, Mistyfy, Symbol of Life. 

Στην αρχική έκδοση υπάρχει ένα ντουέτο διασκευών στα Small Town Boy των synth-pop "φλούφληδων" Bronski Beat, αλλά και κυρίως το Xavier των Dead Can Dance, που είναι η καλύτερη διασκευή που μπορεί να ακούσει κανείς αυτήν την εποχή! 

Πάντως, το άλμπουμ αυτό πλέον έβαλε ξεκάθαρα ιδέες επιστροφής των Paradise Lost (έτσι, δύο λέξεις!) σε αυτό που έκαναν κάποτε. Ο καιρός πλησίαζε όλο και περισσότερο...

Electronic gothic atmosphere.

The light is beginning to appear at the end of the tunnel, now accompanied by natural electric guitars. The return signaled a rise for their disappointed fans, with Believe in Nothing a year ago. This new release is a continuation of that, in a heavier style, but they still want a "little something" to bring themselves back to their pre-fall era. 

Is it pure electronic gothic rock? Is it just gothic rock? Anyway, the Brits seem to have gotten the message. First of all, why have they been joining their name into one word since 2000? Did they want to differentiate their previous metal career from their new style and sound? 

Many questions. The music here remains... very modern for my tastes, but it also has something to say in certain moments. The first two tracks, Isolate and especially Erased, are the best openings. Lots of samples, synthesizers, and below, very heavy guitars on tracks like Pray Nightfall, Primal, Perfect Mask, Self Obsessed, Mistyfy, Symbol of Life. 

In the original version, there's a duet of cover songs: Small Town Boy by the synth-pop "posers" Bronski Beat, and mainly Xavier by Dead Can Dance, which is the best cover you can hear nowadays! 

Anyway, this album has now clearly sparked ideas of Paradise Lost (yes, two words!) returning to what they once did. The time was getting closer and closer...
