Το αμερικανικό progressive rock της δεκαετίας του ’70 ποτέ δεν έφτασε στα καλύτερά του; Όχι ακριβώς! Ειδικότερα, οι Kansas ναι, στο καλύτερο ίσως άλμπουμ τους, το Leftoverture της προηγούμενης χρονιάς, προσθέτουν ένα ακόμη αδιαμφισβήτητο, επίσης κολοσσιαίο έργο. Είναι σαν να πάρεις τους Jethro Tull και να τους ανακατέψεις με μια καλή δόση country μουσικής, προσθέτοντας λίγο Uriah Heep και, στο τέλος, μια τζούρα από Wishbone Ash. Είναι τόσα πολλά πράγματα που έχει η μουσική τους εδώ μέσα: κομμάτια όπως το πιο pop ομότιτλο που ανοίγει το άλμπουμ, διαδέχονται prog rock καταρράκτες σαν αυτόν στο εξώφυλλο, όπως τα Paradox, Portrait (He Knew), Closet Chronicles, και, βέβαια, ίσως το μεγαλύτερο κομμάτι με το οποίο το συγκρότημα είναι άρρηκτα συνδεδεμένο, το Dust in the Wind. Μετά έρχονται τα Sparks of Tempest, Nobody’s Home και Hopelessly Human, ολοκληρώνοντας το μουσικό πακέτο. Ένα πακέτο που, μελλοντικά, σχήματα της προοδευτικής σκηνής, όπως οι Dream Theater και οι Queensrÿche, θα ακολουθήσουν ή θα προσπαθήσουν να ακολουθήσουν στα βήματά του.

Pluralism and Imagination

Did American progressive rock of the 1970s ever reach its peak? Not exactly! Specifically, the Kansas certainly did, with perhaps their best album, Leftoverture, from the previous year, adding another undeniably monumental work. It's like taking Jethro Tull and mixing them with a generous dose of country music, adding a bit of Uriah Heep, and finishing off with a touch of Wishbone Ash. There's so much richness in their music here: tracks like the very pop-oriented title song that opens the album are followed by prog rock waterfalls, like the one on the cover, such as Paradox, Portrait (He Knew), Closet Chronicles, and, of course, perhaps the most iconic piece closely associated with the band, Dust in the Wind. Afterward come Sparks of Tempest, Nobody’s Home, and Hopelessly Human, completing the musical package. A package that, in the future, would inspire or influence progressive bands like Dream Theater and Queensrÿche to follow or attempt to follow in their footsteps.
