SWEEPING DEATH - Devotion To The Absurd Night

Unholy Fire Records

The evaluation of artistic creation, in terms of its beauty or originality, is largely subjective. It depends on how the recipient of the artwork perceives it. However, there are also objective elements that are recognizable in a work, such as the artist's dedication and soul, the time they invested in it, and naturally, the way they utilize their influences and experiences in the composition of their work. In my opinion, these elements can lend a creation a sense of quality and originality. Personal preference, however, remains a matter of taste.

SWEEPING DEATH, for example, dedicated three years of intense work to the creation of their second full-length studio album. They allowed time to work beneficially on their compositions, enabling them to distance themselves from their first release. They didn't want to rush or force things, and in my opinion, they did very well, as their new release absolutely vindicates them.

The sound of SWEEPING DEATH manages to blend classic heavy metal with influences drawn from both the progressive rock scene and the more extreme metal musical expression, incorporating elements of thrash and black metal. They have created an album that I personally characterize as essential progressive heavy metal, as they essentially try to expand their musical horizons by experimenting with elements from other genres of rock and metal music. The entire work gave me the feeling that this is somewhat how OPETH would sound if they ever chose to incorporate more classic heavy metal elements into their sound. In any case, this current release clearly has its own personality, and through its influences, the band creates a personal and recognizable sound.

And on a lyrical level, too, the band does not fall short at all. They have chosen to deal with themes concerning human existence and anxiety. They delve into philosophical thoughts, such as, for example, the Myth of Sisyphus as expressed by Albert Camus. Lyrics that truly fit the band's style and the dramatic – theatrical quality that characterizes it.

A substantial work, of high quality and creative imagination, that is worth listening to. Proof that heavy metal music can constantly open new avenues when there is a willingness for work and creativity.
