REVIEW: METALIAN – Beyond the Wall

METALIAN – Beyond the Wall

Temple of Mystery Records

“Beyond the Wall” is the latest release from Canadian heavy metal band METALIAN. Like their previous albums, this record embraces a retro 1980s heavy metal aesthetic, drawing heavily from the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) sound. Influences from early IRON MAIDEN, SAXON, and RAVEN are unmistakable, with high-pitched vocals, dual guitar harmonies, and raw production capturing the spirit of that era.

Notably, the album was written during the pandemic, with the band rehearsing mostly at night in their secret rehearsal room during curfews. This setting contributed to the album's rugged feel, reminiscent of early metal's raw energy.

At times, the album also incorporates strong punk rock elements, particularly evident in tracks like "Dark City," which blends punk's rawness with heavy metal's intensity,

While “Beyond the Wall” is an enjoyable listen, it doesn't feature standout compositions that linger in the mind or compel immediate replays. It's a solid addition to METALIAN's discography, appealing to fans of classic heavy metal, but it may not break new ground for the genre.
