Μαύρη κουρτίνα. 

Μία αλλαγή τραγουδιστή ποτέ δεν είναι αρεστή. Υπάρχουν, βέβαια, και εξαιρέσεις στην ιστορία της σύγχρονης σκληρής μουσικής. AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Accept και άλλα πολλά σχήματα έχουν αλλάξει frontman είτε με επιτυχημένη διαδοχή είτε με γκρίνιες. Οι Αμερικανοί που παίζουν Power Metal από το 1996 είχαν ήδη δύο αλλαγές στη θέση αυτή, με τον πιο μακροχρόνιο, τον Roy Khan, να έρχεται το 1998 και να αποχωρεί για να επιστρέψει στους Conception (απ’ τους οποίους μεταπήδησε στους Kamelot εξ αρχής) το 2011. Αντικαταστάθηκε από τον νεαρό Tommy Karevik και, με τον δίσκο “Silverthorn” το 2012, τον συνηθίσαμε. Πάρα πολύ εύκολα, μάλιστα, αφού πραγματικά το ίδιο ηχόχρωμα με τον Khan δε θα μπορούσαν να βρουν πουθενά! Το “Haven” εδώ ακολουθεί ακριβώς την ίδια πεπατημένη που έχουν υιοθετήσει από το CD “The Black Halo” του 2005 και μέχρι τώρα. Πολλά πλήκτρα, βαριά gothic αισθητική, με αρχή τα εξώφυλλα των άλμπουμ και τέλος πολλές, φορτωμένες μελωδίες στα κομμάτια, πολύ μοντέρνα αισθητική, σε σημεία έντονες euro-power metal γραμμές και γενικά σταθερή, αν όχι ίδια, ποιότητα μουσικά. 

Για να πω την αλήθεια, τους έχω αφήσει στο μυαλό μου ως και το “Karma”, βίαια το Epica άλμπουμ, οπότε τη μετέπειτα εποχή δεν την έχω σε μεγάλη εκτίμηση. Αλλά εδώ θα υπογραμμίσω τα “Fallen Star”, “Citizen Zero”, “Veil of Elisium”, “End Of Innocence”, “My Therapy”, “Beautiful Apocalypse”, “Revolution”, “Haven” ως τα καλύτερα του δίσκου. Για να είμαστε εντελώς εντάξει, δε θα χάσουμε πολλά, αφού, όπως είπαμε, οι συνθέσεις τους είναι παρόμοιας λογικής για πάρα πολύ μεγάλο διάστημα.

Black Curtain. 

Changing a vocalist is never a popular move. Of course, there are exceptions in the history of modern heavy music. Bands like AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Accept, and many others have changed frontmen either with successful succession or with controversy. The Americans who have been playing Power Metal since 1996 had already undergone two changes in that position, with the longest-serving, Roy Khan, joining in 1998 and leaving to return to Conception (the band he originally left to join Kamelot) in 2011. He was replaced by the young Tommy Karevik, and with the “Silverthorn” album in 2012, we got used to him. Very easily, in fact, since they couldn’t have found a vocal tone closer to Khan’s anywhere else! Here, “Haven” follows exactly the same pattern they’ve adopted since the 2005 album “The Black Halo” and continue to do so. Lots of keyboards, a heavy gothic aesthetic starting from the album covers, and ending with many layered melodies in the songs, a very modern style, with some points featuring intense Euro-power metal lines, and overall a consistent, if not identical, level of musical quality. 

To be honest, I’ve kept them in my mind as even the “Karma” album, and the aggressive Epica record, so I don’t hold the later period in very high regard. But here, I’ll highlight “Fallen Star”, “Citizen Zero”, “Veil of Elisium”, “End Of Innocence”, “My Therapy”, “Beautiful Apocalypse”, “Revolution”, and “Haven” as the best tracks on the album. To be perfectly fair, we won’t lose much, since, as we said, their compositions follow a similar logic over a very long period.
