REVIEW: MAGNUM – The Visitation

MAGNUM – The Visitation

SPV Records

The Visitation marks Magnum’s 16th studio album, arriving two years after Into the Valley of the Moonking. For readers less familiar with the band, Magnum are longestablished figures in the pomprock scene, with vocalist Bob Catley also maintaining a notable solo career.

The album flows pleasantly and carries the band’s trademark melodic sensibility, yet it doesn’t reach the level of a major, careerdefining release. While the production is warm and the performances solid, the record doesn’t consistently hold the listener’s attention at high intensity. Among the nine tracks, “Doors to Nowhere” and “Spin Like the Wheel” stand out as the most engaging compositions, showcasing the band’s strengths in atmosphere and melodic structure.

However, The Visitation cannot be compared to the band’s classic early works such as Kingdom of Madness and Magnum II, which remain benchmarks of their catalogue. This new album is a good, respectable addition for fans of pomp rock, but not an essential entry point for newcomers.

For listeners exploring SPV Records releases, the label offers a wide range of excellent heavy metal titles. And if you’re looking for a more impactful recent release in a similar melodic direction, Stormwarning by TEN is a stronger recommendation.
