Κυνήγι για χίμαιρες ή στροφή στο χαμένο μεγαλείο;

Με μεγάλη περιέργεια για το πώς θα ακούγεται, το άρτι κυκλοφορημένο νέο άλμπουμ αυτού του ονόματος–θεσμού στο αμερικανικό Power και Progressive Metal (κρατήστε ειδικά το δεύτερο, θα μας χρειαστεί), μπήκε ήδη στο «μαντρί» με τα CD. Μία κυκλοφορία για την οποία είχαμε κάποια δείγματα, αλλά ποτέ τα singles δεν αποτελούν αξιόπιστη πηγή.

Με τα 3/5 της ιστορικής σύνθεσης των ετών 1985–1989 και τον Travis Wills στο μικρόφωνο — σε μια θέση από την οποία ο αχανής Midnight (RIP) μας είχε στείλει στο υπερπέραν με το σκοτεινό ομότιτλο ντεμπούτο και το υπερμέγιστο Transcendence — ο Wills έχει αναμφίβολα πολύ δύσκολη δουλειά. Η ομάδα των μουσικών συμπληρώνεται από τους Ben Jackson και Mark Borgmeyer στις κιθάρες, τον Jeff Lords στο μπάσο και τον Dana Burnell στα κρουστά.

Η φωνή του Travis βοηθάει, καθώς διαθέτει κάποια από τα χρώματα και τις μελωδικές τονικότητες του Midnight· μάλλον γι’ αυτό βρίσκεται —και, συμπληρώνω, άξια— εδώ. Σε αντίθεση με τον τέρμα υψίφωνο Wade Black, που μάλλον «κάηκε» εύκολα την εποχή του Astronomica.

Οι εννέα συνθέσεις του άλμπουμ έχουν στοιχεία και ψήγματα από τις εποχές που η πλειονότητα εξ ημών γνώρισε αυτή τη μπάντα. Παρ’ όλα αυτά, δεν ακούμε «tribute band» (τύπου Accept από τα Lidl ή Pantera από τα Walmart, ξέρω ’γω…). Αυτό που ακούμε είναι οι Crimson Glory του 2026.

Να το πω αλλιώς: όσοι ακολουθούν τη μπάντα με την καρδιά τους ίσως παραξενευτούν από την πολύ πιο prog παρά καθαρά power προσέγγιση στη μουσική εδώ.

Η εισαγωγή με το “Redden the Sun”, το ομότιτλο “Chasing the Hydra”, και το “Broken Together” φέρνουν τις πρώτες αναμνήσεις από το παρελθόν. Τα “Angel in My Nightmare”, “Indelible Ashes”, “Beyond the Unknown”, “Armor Against Fate”, “Pearls of Dust” και το τελικό “Triskaideka” (τρείς και δέκα, δηλαδή 13 — ναι, με ελληνικό τίτλο!) συνθέτουν ένα άλμπουμ αξιόλογης προσπάθειας.

Είναι πολύ νωρίς για να πω τι μου αρέσει περισσότερο. Πάμε όμως καλά, και νομίζω πως, παρά τις Κασσάνδρες που βιάστηκαν να του πετάξουν λάσπη, μάλλον έχουμε έναν ακόμη νικητή για το ’26, με σίγουρα θετικό πρόσημο στο στερεοφωνικό μας.

Chasing phantoms or reclaiming lost glory?

With great curiosity about how it would sound, the freshly released new album from this name‑institution of American Power and Progressive Metal (especially the latter — we’ll need it) has already found its way into the CD “pen.” We had heard a few early samples, but singles are never a reliable source.

With 3/5 of the classic 1985–1989 lineup and Travis Wills on vocals — stepping into a role from which the boundless Midnight (RIP) had sent us into the beyond with the dark self‑titled debut and the monumental Transcendence — Wills undoubtedly has a very difficult task. The rest of the band is completed by Ben Jackson and Mark Borgmeyer on guitars, Jeff Lords on bass, and Dana Burnell on drums.

Travis’ voice helps, carrying some of the colors and melodic tonalities of Midnight; that’s probably why he’s here — and, I’d add, deservedly so. Quite unlike the ultra‑high‑pitched Wade Black, who seemed to burn out rather quickly during the Astronomica era.

The album’s nine compositions contain elements and traces of the eras through which most of us first discovered this band. Yet this is not a “tribute band” situation (no Accept-from-Lidl or Pantera-from-Walmart vibes…). What we’re hearing is Crimson Glory in 2026.

To put it differently: those who follow the band with their hearts may be surprised by the far more prog‑leaning rather than purely power‑metal approach here.

The opening trio — “Redden the Sun,” the title track “Chasing the Hydra,” and “Broken Together” — brings the first flashes of the past. “Angel in My Nightmare,” “Indelible Ashes,” “Beyond the Unknown,” “Armor Against Fate,” “Pearls of Dust,” and the closing “Triskaideka” (three and ten, meaning 13 — yes, with a Greek title!) form an album of genuine merit.

It’s far too early to say what I like best. But things look good, and despite the Cassandras who rushed to throw mud at it, I think we may have another winner for ’26 — with a decidedly positive sign on our stereo.
