GREY
SKIES FALLEN – Along Came Life
Xanthros Music
GREY SKIES FALLEN may not be newcomers, yet I only
recently had the chance to dive into their work with the release of their
latest EP — despite their three full‑length albums already out in the world. Better late
than never, as the saying goes. And in this case, I’m genuinely glad I finally
crossed paths with their music, because what they create is rich in texture,
emotion, and sonic depth. It’s the kind of material that pulls you into its
atmosphere and refuses to let go. Along Came Life does exactly that.
Although the band is often labeled as melodic death
metal — and perhaps that description fit earlier stages of their career — it
doesn’t accurately capture what’s happening on this EP. What I hear now is an
atmospheric metal approach, where melodic death metal elements appear more as
strategic contrasts: sharpening the emotional edges, intensifying the dynamic
shifts, and giving the songs a sense of dramatic tension.
There are also clear doom undercurrents and
progressive touches. I use “progressive” in its true sense: frequent tempo
changes, fluid transitions between harsher and more melodic ideas, and a
willingness to introduce pioneering elements that set GREY SKIES FALLEN apart
from the crowd. In an oversaturated scene, the band has managed to carve out a
distinctive sound, and that alone is no small achievement.
The musicianship is consistently strong, the interplay
between clean vocals and growls is executed with confidence, and the production
is polished without sacrificing atmosphere. The visual side of the release also
stands out, thanks to the always‑excellent artwork of Travis Smith.
Along Came Life is an EP that invites immersion.
Whether listeners come for the atmosphere, the emotional weight, or the genre‑blending craft, GREY SKIES FALLEN offer something that
feels both personal and unmistakably their own.
