Ένα θεματικό άλμπουμ

Ένα θεματικό άλμπουμ είναι η πρόσφατη, τελευταία δουλειά της μπάντας απ’ τη Σπάρτη. Ένα σχήμα με ιστορία από το 2008 και δισκογραφία πέντε ήδη άλμπουμ — δεν μετράω τη νέα ηχογράφηση του ντεμπούτου τους, Epiclesis, το ’21 ως ξεχωριστή κυκλοφορία — μόλις κυκλοφόρησε το συγκεκριμένο, λίγες εβδομάδες πριν.

Είναι μία μπάντα που, ως προς τον τρόπο δημιουργίας του έργου της, είχε κάποτε περάσει το DIY σε άλλο επίπεδο. Εδώ, πάλι, μας δίνουν μία σκοτεινή ιστορία, ένα δηλαδή concept άλμπουμ, δομημένο σε δέκα μέρη/τραγούδια και δύο κεφάλαια. Catalesis, Catharsis, Ensynesthesis, Paraclesis, Regenesis είναι οι αμιγώς ελληνικοί τίτλοι των πέντε πρώτων κομματιών, του ενός κεφαλαίου δηλαδή, ενώ Parallel Vision, Now Command, Soul Catcher, The Unified Field, A Timeless Framework of Existance είναι οι τίτλοι των άλλων πέντε, φτάνοντας στα 50 λεπτά συνολικής διάρκειας.

Μουσικά, νομίζω πιάνουν το πράγμα από εκεί που το άφησαν στο «Δεινόν Εστί», τέσσερα χρόνια νωρίτερα. Σκοτεινό, σύγχρονο Heavy Metal με πολύ κοφτερές κιθάρες, κάπου ανάμεσα στους Iced Earth και τους Nevermore των κλασικών late ’90s εποχών, για να μπείτε στο νόημα, έχοντας ένα Thrash Metal υπόβαθρο δηλαδή, με έντονη ρυθμική γραμμή.

Είναι πάλι σαν να ακούς ’90s Metal, με πολύ σύγχρονη παραγωγή και μίξη, βέβαια, από τον Δημήτρη Σακκά, να απογειώνει ακόμη περισσότερο την ηχητική εμπειρία. Πρακτικά, εξελίσσουν το όραμά τους εδώ, παραμένοντας πιστοί στον ήχο που έχτισαν τόσα χρόνια.

Η τετράδα του γκρουπ, Βλάσης Διαμαντάκος, Γιώργος Τζάθας, Δημήτρης Κουρούτης και Φοίβος Ανδριανόπουλος, έφτιαξε ένα άλμπουμ με το οποίο καταφέρνει να δείξει ξανά ότι, ακόμη και εκτός των μεγάλων κέντρων της χώρας, η ελληνική σκηνή γεννάει σταθερά καλή μουσική και έχει να δώσει ακόμη περισσότερα.

Ένα άλμπουμ που, νομίζω, μόνο αν το ακούσει κανείς θα κατανοήσει το βάθος του νοήματός του.

A Thematic Album

A thematic album is the latest work from the band from Sparta. A group with a history dating back to 2008 and a discography that already spans five albums — not counting the new recording of their debut, Epiclesis, in 2021 as a separate release — they released this particular album just a few weeks ago.

This is a band that, in terms of the way they have created their work, once took the DIY approach to another level. Here, once again, they deliver a dark story: a concept album structured into ten parts/songs and two chapters. Catalesis, Catharsis, Ensynesthesis, Paraclesis, and Regenesis are the purely Greek titles of the first five tracks, comprising the first chapter, while Parallel Vision, Now Command, Soul Catcher, The Unified Field, and A Timeless Framework of Existance make up the remaining five, bringing the total running time to 50 minutes.

Musically, I think they pick things up from where they left off on Deinon Esti, four years earlier. Dark, contemporary Heavy Metal with very sharp-edged guitars, somewhere between classic late-’90s Iced Earth and Nevermore, to give you an idea, with a Thrash Metal foundation and a strong rhythmic backbone.

It once again feels like listening to ’90s Metal, but with a thoroughly modern production and mix by Dimitris Sakkas, elevating the overall sonic experience even further. In practice, they are taking their vision a step further here while remaining faithful to the sound they have built over all these years.

The band’s four-piece lineup — Vlasis Diamantakos, Giorgos Tzathas, Dimitris Kouroutis, and Foivos Andrianopoulos — have created an album that once again proves that, even outside the country’s major urban centers, the Greek scene continues to produce consistently good music and still has much more to offer.

An album whose depth and meaning, I believe, can only truly be understood by listening to it.
