LORD VIGO, We Shall Overcome (2022)

Τι ακριβώς ακούνε τα αφτιά μου;

Μεγαλειώδες, αγωνιώδες, επικό, επιστημονικής φαντασίας, προοδευτικό μέταλ... Όλα αυτά κι άλλα τόσα βρίσκονται στο άλμπουμ των Γερμανών metallers, οι οποίοι εντάσσονταν στο Doom Metal από το 2014, όταν κυκλοφόρησε το ντεμπούτο τους, αλλά πλέον δεν κατατάσσονται εύκολα σε κάποια συγκεκριμένη κατηγορία.

Ένα καλοφτιαγμένο και πολύ δουλεμένο μείγμα από Heavy, Power και Doom, αλλά και Gothic Metal, με έναν τραγουδιστή κάπου ανάμεσα στον Eric Clayton των Saviour Machine, τον Andrew Eldritch των The Sisters of Mercy και... τον Marian Gold των synth-pop Alphaville!

Πραγματικά, τόσο ιδιαίτερη αλλά και μεγαλειώδης χροιά έχει το στυλ του Vinz Clortho, ο οποίος ήταν αρχικά και ο ντράμερ του συγκροτήματος, αν και στο άλμπουμ τα ντραμς παίζει ο Ivo Shandor. Οι Tony και Munzo Scoleri παίζουν κιθάρες, ενώ ο Colgus Zildrohar βρίσκεται επίσης στην κιθάρα, αλλά και στα αρκετά συνθεσάιζερ και πλήκτρα, με τον Zuul στο μπάσο.

Γενικά, πρόκειται για ένα συγκρότημα αποτελούμενο από ταλαντούχους πολυοργανίστες μουσικούς! Έντεκα κομμάτια στο CD, με ιδιαίτερη μελωδική γραμμή, βάρος και νεωτερική λογική στη σύνθεση.

Παρόλα αυτά, το συνολικό θεματικό πλαίσιο —μια Rock όπερα με φόντο το σκοτεινό και, μάλλον, όχι και τόσο εναλλακτικό μέλλον που περιμένει την ανθρωπότητα, η οποία ζει στη φανταστική Megacity Omega το έτος 2137— αναδεικνύεται ιδιαίτερα μέσα από τα κομμάτια The Heart of Eternal Night, Natural Habitat, Since the Sun Was Young, From Our Ashes We Will Rise, We Shall Overcome, A Necessary Evil, A Gathering of Clouds και A New Dark Age, που αποτελούν και το «ζουμί» του άλμπουμ.

What Exactly Am I Hearing?

Grandiose, atmospheric, epic, science-fiction-inspired, progressive metal... All of these elements and more can be found on this album by the German metallers, who were associated with Doom Metal from 2014, when their debut was released, but can no longer be easily placed within any specific genre.

A carefully crafted and thoroughly worked-out blend of Heavy, Power and Doom Metal, with elements of Gothic Metal as well, featuring a vocalist whose style falls somewhere between Eric Clayton of Saviour Machine, Andrew Eldritch of The Sisters of Mercy and... Marian Gold of synth-pop legends Alphaville!

Vinz Clortho's style has a truly distinctive yet grandiose vocal character. He was originally also the band's drummer, although the drums on this album are handled by Ivo Shandor. Tony and Munzo Scoleri provide the guitars, while Colgus Zildrohar is also on guitar, alongside the album's numerous synthesizers and keyboards, with Zuul on bass.

Overall, this is a band made up of highly talented multi-instrumentalists. Eleven tracks make up the CD, all featuring distinctive melodic lines, considerable weight and a modern, forward-thinking approach to composition.

 

Nevertheless, it is the album's overall thematic framework — a rock opera set against the backdrop of a dark and, perhaps, not quite so alternative future awaiting humanity, which inhabits the fictional Megacity Omega in the year 2137 — that truly comes to the forefront through tracks such as The Heart of Eternal Night, Natural Habitat, Since the Sun Was Young, From Our Ashes We Will Rise, We Shall Overcome, A Necessary Evil, A Gathering of Clouds and A New Dark Age. These are, essentially, the heart and soul of the album.
