Κρύβεται η ουσία των πρώτων βημάτων για αυτό το σχήμα, που εν αγνοία του θα ιδρύσει ένα ολόκληρο ηχητικό παρακλάδι πολύ σύντομα. Οι συμπατριώτες τους Dokken έχουν ήδη ξεκινήσει κι αυτοί και το Los Angeles δεν έχει πει ακόμη την τελευταία του λέξη στη Hard & Heavy Rock μουσική.

Αλλά πίσω στο συγκρότημα. Αυτό είναι το πρώτο τους άλμπουμ, σε δική τους παραγωγή και κοπή, αφού συνέστησαν μέχρι και εταιρεία για να το κυκλοφορήσουν. Το Too Hot For Love του 1981 έχει κάτι να μας πει. Από κει και μετά, το χάος!

Το γεγονός ότι αντέγραψαν κάργα το στυλ των New York Dolls, με το αμφίφυλο image και, φυσικά, την αρχική τους μορφή, ονόματι Sister (όχι, δεν είναι αυτό που φαντάζεσαι), παρέα με τον Blackie πριν γίνει ο δυναμικός frontman των W.A.S.P., γέννησε τη σχολή του Glam Metal. Μάλλον, δυστυχώς!

Μουσικά, το συγκεκριμένο άλμπουμ συγκαταλέγεται στο αμερικανικό Heavy Metal. Βέβαια, μη τρελαθούμε κιόλας! Πάντως, το ομώνυμο κομμάτι, το Looks That Kill, το Bastard, το ορχηστρικό God Bless the Children of the Beast, η διασκευή του Helter Skelter των Beatles, το Knock 'Em Dead, Kid και, φυσικά, το κλασικό Too Young to Fall in Love, είναι τυπικά δείγματα μιας εποχής που βρίσκεται ακόμη στα πρώτα της σκιρτήματα.

Δεν είμαι φίλος των παιδιών του Hair Metal, αλλά κάποια άλμπουμ από αυτό το ιδίωμα τιμούν τη συλλογή. Αυτό είναι ένα απ’ αυτά — και το δεύτερο και τελευταίο δικό τους!

Behind the Ridiculous Image...

Lies the essence of the early steps of a band that, unbeknownst to itself, was about to establish an entire musical offshoot very soon. Their fellow Los Angeles natives Dokken had already got the ball rolling, and Los Angeles had certainly not yet said its last word when it came to Hard & Heavy Rock.

But back to the band. This is their debut album, self-produced and independently pressed, after they even went as far as setting up their own label to release it. Too Hot for Love, from 1981, has something to say. After that, all hell breaks loose!

The fact that they blatantly copied the New York Dolls' style, complete with the androgynous image and, of course, their original incarnation, Sister (no, it's not what you think), alongside Blackie before he became the charismatic frontman of W.A.S.P., ultimately gave birth to the Glam Metal school. Unfortunately, perhaps!

Musically, this particular album falls under the American Heavy Metal banner. Of course, let's not get carried away! Still, the title track, Looks That Kill, Bastard, the instrumental God Bless the Children of the Beast, their cover of the Beatles' Helter Skelter, Knock 'Em Dead, Kid and, naturally, the classic Too Young to Fall in Love are typical examples of an era that was still in its infancy.

I'm not a fan of the Hair Metal crowd, but there are certain albums from the genre that deserve a place in any collection. This is one of them — and their second and final one at that!
