Μία μπάντα που γνώριζα μόνο εξ ακοής, μέχρι να βρω το πρώτο της CD, είναι οι Αθηναίοι Valiant Sentinel. Είναι κάτι που πλέον έχω καταλάβει σε βάθος: η σκηνή του χώρου μας κρύβει πολλά κοσμήματα στον ήχο που αγαπάμε. Καιρός, λοιπόν, να μπούμε βαθιά στις στοές του underground για να ανακαλύψουμε αυτά τα πετράδια!

Η μπάντα, ωστόσο, έκρυβε και κάτι ακόμη που δεν γνώριζα. Στην πραγματικότητα, ο κιθαρίστας, μπασίστας και πληκτράς Δημήτρης Σκόδρας ξεκίνησε τη σύνθεση και τη συγγραφή της μουσικής για τα κομμάτια αυτού του ομότιτλου άλμπουμ το 2015, ολοκληρώνοντας τη δουλειά πέντε χρόνια αργότερα, έχοντας αναλάβει μόνος του ολόκληρο το εγχείρημα ως one-man band!

Πρόσφατα, είχα την ευκαιρία να τον δω επί σκηνής μαζί με τους άλλους τέσσερις φίλους του, έχοντας στο πλευρό τους και τον πραγματικό ιππότη της μπάντας, πλήρως εξοπλισμένο με τη γυαλιστερή πανοπλία του, το ξίφος και την ασπίδα του! Μια παρουσία που δικαιολογεί τόσο το όνομα του συγκροτήματος όσο και το εξαιρετικά ταιριαστό artwork του δίσκου!

Τους στίχους ερμηνεύει ο Rob Lundgren (Reveal) και, αν ακόμη δεν έγινε κατανοητό τι μουσική παίζουν οι Valiant Sentinel, η απάντηση είναι Power Metal ελληνικής τεχνοτροπίας, με έντονο επικό στοιχείο. Αν αναρωτιέστε με ποιους θα μπορούσαμε να τους συγκρίνουμε, βάλτε στο μουσικό μπλέντερ τους Stormwitch, τους Heaven's Gate και τους Blind Guardian. Πολύ Γερμανία μαζεύτηκε, το ξέρω, αλλά έτσι είναι! Προσθέστε μια όμορφη, σύγχρονη παραγωγή και το αποτέλεσμα αφήνει εξαιρετικά θετικές εντυπώσεις.

Έντεκα κομμάτια περιλαμβάνει ο δίσκος, τα περισσότερα από τα οποία κερδίζουν αμέσως το αυτί σου, όπως τα «Victorious», «Destiny Awaits», «Age of Mythology», «One Must Fall», «Noble Knight», «The Legionnaire», «King in the North» και «Titans Awake».

Greek Steel, Forged Alone

One band I had only heard of before coming across their debut CD is Athens-based Valiant Sentinel. One thing I have come to realise is that our local scene is hiding plenty of gems in the kind of music we love. It is high time we ventured deep into the underground's tunnels to uncover these precious stones!

However, there was something else about the band that I was unaware of. Guitarist, bassist and keyboardist Dimitris Skodras actually began composing and writing the music for the tracks on this self-titled album back in 2015, completing the work five years later. He had taken on the entire project by himself, effectively operating as a one-man band!

Recently, I had the opportunity to see him on stage alongside his four fellow musicians, accompanied by the band's very own knight, fully equipped with his shiny armour, sword and shield! A sight that perfectly justifies both the band's name and the remarkably fitting artwork adorning the album!

The vocals are handled by Rob Lundgren (Reveal), and if you still haven't figured out what Valiant Sentinel are all about, the answer is Power Metal in the Greek tradition, with a strong epic element. If you're wondering what they sound like, throw Stormwitch, Heaven's Gate and Blind Guardian into the musical blender. That's a lot of German bands, I know, but that's just how it is! Add some fine, modern production to the mix, and the result makes a very positive impression.

The album features eleven tracks, most of which immediately catch your ear, including “Victorious”, “Destiny Awaits”, “Age of Mythology”, “One Must Fall”, “Noble Knight”, “The Legionnaire”, “King in the North” and “Titans Awake”.
