REVIEW: EUROPE, Europe

EUROPE, Europe (1983)

Epic

«Seven Doors Hotel», «In The Future to Come», «The King Will Return», το πανέμορφο ορχηστρικό «Boyazont», «Children of This Time», «Paradize Bay», «Memories»: κομμάτια πραγματικά υποτιμημένα, ίσως πλέον ακόμη και από το ίδιο το συγκρότημα!

English:

A Promising Beginning Is Not Always Half the Battle!

Four young lads, barely twenty years old, win a competition in Sweden in 1982, with the prize being a recording contract with Swedish label Hot Records. Joey Tempest on vocals, John Norum on guitar, John Leven on bass, and Tony Reno on drums. And, of course, these are all pseudonyms, because Swedish names aren’t exactly the easiest to pronounce in English!

The album came out a year later, featuring the faces of the four members on the cover, against a blue background, with a white outline around the red lettering of their name. That is exactly how it appears on the reissue by multinational label Sony/Epic, which signed them shortly afterwards. The only difference is the cathedral, complete with angels playing electric guitars, replacing the musicians in the original cover artwork!

I don’t know whether the album’s nine tracks were remixed, but at this point, it doesn’t really matter. History has been written, and the sound of this debut comes almost (almost, mind you, I’m stressing the word, got that?) closer to European Heavy Metal, with plenty of neoclassical elements in Norum’s guitar work and a clear melodic orientation, than to the American brand of Hair Metal they would embrace five years later.

“Seven Doors Hotel,” “In The Future to Come,” “The King Will Return,” the beautiful instrumental “Boyazont,” “Children of This Time,” “Paradize Bay,” “Memories”: genuinely underrated songs, perhaps even by the band themselves at this point!

Τάκης "Ε-Μortal One" Γιώτης!
