Δεν γνωρίζαμε, βέβαια, πριν από εννέα χρόνια ότι αυτό θα ήταν το τελευταίο άλμπουμ των θρυλικών Sarissa από τη Θεσσαλονίκη, ενός συγκροτήματος συνυφασμένου με τον κλασικό heavy metal ήχο της χώρας μας για τρεις ολόκληρες δεκαετίες.

Ο μπασίστας Δημήτρης Σαλελμανζίδης, που κρατούσε ζωντανό το όνομα των Sarissa με νύχια και με δόντια, έφυγε άδοξα από τη ζωή λίγα χρόνια αργότερα, καθιστώντας αυτόν τον δίσκο το κύκνειο άσμα του συγκροτήματος.

Ο Γιώργος Χατζησυμεώνιδης στα φωνητικά, ο Ορέστης Ναλμπαντής στην κιθάρα και ο Στέλιος Σιούλας στα τύμπανα είναι οι μουσικοί πίσω από αυτό το άλμπουμ. Έναν δίσκο που ακούγεται σαφώς διαφορετικός από τον προκάτοχό του, Masters of Sins, με τον οποίο, άλλωστε, τον χωρίζουν δώδεκα ολόκληρα χρόνια.

Ήταν αναμενόμενο πως δεν θα έπαιζαν ακριβώς το ίδιο. Δεν υπήρξε μια ομαλή εξέλιξη μέσα από ένα ή δύο ενδιάμεσα άλμπουμ — πέρα από το EP Macedonia — επομένως οποιαδήποτε αλλαγή στο ύφος, ιδιαίτερα σε ό,τι αφορά την παραγωγή και τον πιο σύγχρονο ηχητικό προσανατολισμό, είναι απολύτως κατανοητή. Παρ' όλα αυτά, οι αλλαγές δεν γίνονται ενοχλητικά αισθητές.

Στη θετική πλευρά, συνθέσεις που αγγίζουν τον χαρακτηρισμό του ύμνου, όπως τα "In To The Night", "No Man's Land", "Sacrifice", "Now Or Never", "Fight the Devil", "Warriors", αλλά και το εναρκτήριο "Daughter of the Night (Nemesis)", δεν αφήνουν κανέναν λόγο να προσπεράσει κανείς αυτόν τον δίσκο. Κάθε άλλο.

Ένα άλμπουμ που αποτελεί την τελευταία παρακαταθήκη ενός συγκροτήματος το οποίο εμπλούτισε διαχρονικά την ελληνική metal σκηνή και άφησε το δικό του ανεξίτηλο αποτύπωμα στην ιστορία της.

One Final Landmark

Nine years ago, of course, we had no way of knowing that this would become the final album by Thessaloniki's legendary Sarissa, a band that had been synonymous with the classic heavy metal sound in Greece for three full decades.

Bassist Dimitris Salelmanzidis, the man who kept the Sarissa name alive through sheer determination against all odds, sadly passed away a few years later, making this album the band's swan song.

George Chatzisymeonidis on vocals, Orestis Nalbantis on guitar, and Stelios Sioulas on drums are the musicians behind this release. It is an album that sounds noticeably different from its predecessor, Masters of Sins, which had been released no less than twelve years earlier.

Such a change was only to be expected. There wasn't a gradual progression through one or two intervening full-length albums—apart from the Macedonia EP—so any stylistic evolution, particularly in terms of the production and the more contemporary sonic approach, is entirely understandable. Even so, these changes never become distracting or feel out of place.

On the positive side, songs that can rightfully be called anthems—such as "In To The Night," "No Man's Land," "Sacrifice," "Now Or Never," "Fight the Devil," "Warriors," as well as the opening "Daughter of the Night (Nemesis)"—leave no reason whatsoever to overlook this album. Quite the opposite.

This is an album that stands as the final legacy of a band that enriched the Greek metal scene throughout its career and left an indelible mark on its history.
