Αλλαγή φρουράς στη νέα εποχή

Με τον μεγαλύτερο απ' τη ζωή, τον Messiah Mercolin, να έχει φύγει μετά από τρία στούντιο άλμπουμ, το ένα καλύτερο από το άλλο, ο Thomas Vikstrom, με αρκετά παρεμφερή φωνή, αναλαμβάνει το μικρόφωνο σε αυτό το έκτο συνολικά (μετράνε και το live οι Σουηδοί) άλμπουμ του σχήματος, που βοήθησε στον επανακαθορισμό του Epic Doom Metal όσο κανένα άλλο, τουλάχιστον στην ευρωπαϊκή ήπειρο.

Κατά τα άλλα, δεν αλλάζει η συνταγή: ογκοδέστατα κομμάτια με πολύ βάρος, ταχύτητα σε σημεία, αλλά και περισσότερα πλήκτρα απ' ό,τι συνηθιζόταν μέχρι τώρα, ίσως! Οι Lars Johansson και Mats Bjorkman στις κιθάρες, ο μπασίστας Leif Edling, το αφεντικό, και ο ντράμερ Jan Lindh συμπληρώνουν τη σύνθεση από πλευράς μουσικών.

Το σχετικά γρήγορο "The Dying Illusion" σέρνει τον χορό, ακολουθεί το απύθμενου βάρους "Where the Runes Still Speak". Τα κομμάτια "The Ebony Throne", "Temple of the Dead", "Aftermath" και "Black Eyes" από τον αρχικό δίσκο είναι αυτά που ξεχωρίζουν.

Στη επανέκδοση του CD υπάρχουν τέσσερα bonus, με το "Bullfest" να αποτελεί πολύ καλή προσθήκη.

Changing the Guard in the New Era

With Messiah Mercolin, the greatest of them all, having departed after three studio albums—each one better than the last—Thomas Vikstrom, with a notably similar vocal style, takes on the microphone for this, the band’s sixth overall album (including the live recordings by the Swedes). This band has played a significant role in redefining Epic Doom Metal more than any other, at least on the European continent.

Otherwise, the formula remains unchanged: massive tracks with great weight, moments of speed, and perhaps more keyboards than ever before. Lars Johansson and Mats Bjorkman on guitars, bassist Leif Edling— the band’s founder—and drummer Jan Lindh complete the lineup of musicians.

The relatively fast "The Dying Illusion" kicks things off, followed by the abyssally heavy "Where the Runes Still Speak." Tracks like "The Ebony Throne," "Temple of the Dead," "Aftermath," and "Black Eyes" from the original album stand out as highlights.

The reissue of the CD includes four bonus tracks, with "Bullfest" being a particularly excellent addition.
