STRATOVARIUS, Eternal (2015)

Υπάρχουν και καλά κρατούν.

Οι αγαπημένοι Φινλανδοί, με τον Σουηδό πληκτρά Jens Johanson, τον ερμηνευτή Timo Kotipelto και τους Matias Kupiainen (κιθάρα), Lauri Porra (μπάσο) και Rolf Pilve (ντραμς), βρίσκονται στον πέμπτο τους δίσκο. Έχουμε αναλογιστεί ότι στο ντεμπούτο τους το 1989, Fright Night, δεν υπάρχει κανένα κοινό μέλος με τη παραπάνω σύνθεση που έγραψε το Eternal; Κι όμως, ένα από τα παράδοξα γύρω από τους θεμελιωτές του ευρωπαϊκού Power Metal είναι και αυτό. Οπότε, το brandname τους καλά κρατεί και προφανώς είναι πολύ ισχυρό στη metal κοινότητα. Σαν δίσκος, δε διεκδικεί δάφνες πρωτοτυπίας, γιατί να το κάνει άλλωστε; Μελωδικά πλήκτρα, λίγο ξερή παραγωγή, αλλά τρώγεται, και τα κλασικά riffs που ξεκίνησαν επί Timo Tolkki και συνεχίζονται επάξια από τον Matias. Το προηγούμενο τους άλμπουμ, το Nemesis, θα έλεγα ότι ακούγεται σχετικά κουρασμένο σε σχέση με αυτό, οπότε μια μικρή βελτίωση ναι, τη βρίσκεις στα δέκα κομμάτια του. Τα My Eternal Dream, Shine In the Dark, Rise Above All, Feeding the Fire, Man In the Mirror, Fire in Your Eyes, The Lost Saga είναι τα αντιπροσωπευτικά δείγματα.

The beloved Finns, with Swedish keyboardist Jens Johanson, vocalist Timo Kotipelto, and members Matias Kupiainen (guitar), Lauri Porra (bass), and Rolf Pilve (drums), are now on their fifth album. Have we considered that on their debut in 1989, Fright Night, none of the members from the current lineup who wrote Eternal were involved? Yet, this is one of the paradoxes surrounding the founders of European Power Metal. So, their brand name remains solid and is obviously very strong within the metal community. As an album, it doesn't claim to break new ground—why should it? Melodic keyboards, a somewhat raw production, but still enjoyable, and the classic riffs that started with Timo Tolkki and are now carried on admirably by Matias. I would say their previous album, Nemesis, sounds relatively tired compared to this one, so yes, there's a slight improvement—found in these ten tracks. The standout songs are My Eternal Dream, Shine In the Dark, Rise Above All, Feeding the Fire, Man In the Mirror, Fire In Your Eyes, and The Lost Saga.
