THE
LAST THINGS – Circles and Butterflies
Arkeyn Steel Records
"Circles and Butterflies" is a re-release by
the Florida-based metal band THE LAST THINGS, featuring a blend of power and
progressive metal. The band was formed following the disbandment of their
previous project, BLACKKOUT, whose sole album was also reissued by Arkeyn Steel
Records.
This edition of "Circles and Butterflies"
includes a total of 16 tracks, with five bonus songs derived from the band's
earlier demos from 1990 and 1994. The first 500 copies of the release include a
bonus DVD showcasing a live performance by BLACKKOUT, adding additional value
for collectors and fans.
Notable tracks on the album include "51216"
(which stands out as one of the strongest compositions), "Cassandra,"
"Inside the Circle," and "The Spirit Lives." Several of
these tracks originate from the band's 1990 demo, which received favorable
reception. The song "Circles of Willis," featured on the album, is
particularly noteworthy; it evokes the intensity and complexity reminiscent of WATCHTOWER,
serving as a highlight of the record.
Vocalist Richard Elliot IV delivers solid performances
throughout, complemented by the band's high technical proficiency. The
production, overseen by Kostas Scandalis, ensures clarity and balance, with a
remastering process that enhances the overall sound quality. Additionally, the
inclusion of instruments like the flute adds an interesting layer of musical
texture uncommon in typical metal arrangements.
The album's artwork and booklet design are
well-executed, complementing the musical content and providing an appealing
presentation.
In summary, "Circles and Butterflies" is a
noteworthy release for fans of power and progressive metal. While the band's
approach incorporates elements that appeal beyond traditional prog-metal
audiences, even listeners with a more general metal interest may find this
album engaging.
Note: An in-depth interview with Richard Elliot IV
discussing BLACKKOUT and THE LAST THINGS can be found in the latest issue of
Snakepit magazine (Issue 20).
