Μοναχικά μπλουζ κάτω απ’ το φως του φεγγαριού

Το συγκρότημα από το Δουβλίνο της Ιρλανδίας είχε ακόμα δρόμο να διανύσει μέχρι την αναγνώριση. Αυτός ο δρόμος περιλάμβανε και τη «Νυχτερινή Ζωή», τον τίτλο δηλαδή του τέταρτου δίσκου τους, που σίγουρα, αν έχουμε στο μυαλό μας τα πιο κλασικά τους κομμάτια στα τέλη της δεκαετίας του ’70, θα μας φανεί άνευρος! Όσο κι αν κάποιοι δεν θέλουν να παραδεχτούν ότι η rock ζει χάρη στην ίδια της την εξέλιξη αλλά και στην αλληλεπίδρασή της με άλλα είδη, θα τους έλεγα πως τότε θα ακούγαμε ακόμη rockabilly, σαν να βρισκόμασταν στη «Μέρα της Μαρμότας», ζώντας συνεχώς την περίοδο 1955–1965.

Η μουσική τους εδώ έχει έντονα στοιχεία από blues, funk, soul, ακόμη και ethnic και southern rock αρωματικές πινελιές. Η ήρεμη αφετηρία με τα She Knows, Night Life δίνει τη θέση της στο νευρικό It’s Only Money. Το κλασικό αλλά ιδιαίτερο Sha-La-La, τα Showdown, Banshee, Philomena (αφιερωμένο στη μητέρα του από τον Phil Lynott), Still In Love With You δεν είναι τίποτα άλλο από ηλεκτρικό blues μέσα από το πρίσμα των τεσσάρων μουσικών του σχήματος.

Αν περιμένετε μερικά χρόνια, στο Jailbreak θα βρείτε την αφετηρία του πιο βαρύ ύφους τους.

Lonely Blues Beneath the Moonlight

The band from Dublin, Ireland still had a long road ahead before reaching recognition. That journey included Night Life—the title of their fourth album—which, if we’re thinking of their more classic tracks from the late ’70s, might sound rather subdued. Yet, no matter how reluctant some may be to admit that rock survives thanks to its own evolution and its interaction with other genres, I’d remind them that otherwise we’d still be listening to rockabilly, stuck in a “Groundhog Day” loop, reliving 1955 to 1965 over and over again.

Their music here is infused with strong elements of blues, funk, soul, and even touches of ethnic and southern rock. The calm opening with She Knows and Night Life gives way to the edgy It’s Only Money. The classic yet distinctive Sha-La-La, along with Showdown, Banshee, Philomena (dedicated to Phil Lynott’s mother), and Still In Love With You, are nothing less than electric blues filtered through the lens of the band’s four musicians.

Give it a few more years, and with Jailbreak, you’ll witness the birth of their heavier sound.
