REVIEW: SKULLFIST – Head of the Pack

SKULLFIST – Head of the Pack

NoiseArt Records

Head of the Pack marks the debut full-length release from the Canadian metal band Skullfist, following their well-received EP, Heavier Than Metal. The band first garnered attention through that release, which I found particularly impressive, leading to an interview with them for Behind The Veil. Their live performance at the Up The Hammers festival further confirmed their energy and stage presence, leaving a strong impression.

Released through NoiseArt Records (formerly known as Music For Nation Records), the album features a slightly revised lineup compared to previous recordings. Notably, the album adopts a somewhat more composed and less impulsive approach than the EP, though it maintains the band's core quality and energy.

The album comprises nine new tracks, along with the song “No False Metal” from their 2006 demo and a cover of Tokyo Blade’s “Attack, Attack.” The overall flow of the album is smooth, with moments that evoke the spirit of classic bands like Riot, particularly reminiscent of Thundersteel.

Among the tracks, favorites include the title track “Head of the Pack,” “Commanding the Night,” “Commit to Rock,” and “Like a Fox.” The album features the characteristic high-pitched vocals typical of traditional speed and power metal, appealing especially to fans of old-school metal styles.

In summary, Head of the Pack is a solid addition to the speed and power metal genre. It demonstrates consistent quality and respect for classic metal influences, making it a worthwhile investment for aficionados of the genre seeking energetic, melodic metal with a traditional touch.
