MAGIC
KINGDOM – MetAlmighty
AFM Records
So there I was, listening to DEEP PURPLE’s “In Rock”
and browsing through some CDs from my collection, when I stumbled upon this
one. I thought, hey, perfect chance to give it another spin. After all,
transitioning from Blackmore to the neoclassical power metal of MAGIC KINGDOM
feels like a totally natural move. At least for me.
The band is the brainchild of virtuoso guitarist
Dushan Petrossi, whom I also know from IRON MASK. The guy doesn’t hide his
admiration for Malmsteen (and really, when you’re talking about Blackmore, it’s
only logical for Malmsteen to pop up too). Just take a look at the CD booklet
photos—he could easily pass for Malmsteen’s twin brother.
On this album, he’s joined by the equally brilliant
Vescera on vocals. Together, they deliver a beautifully structured neoclassical
power metal record that holds onto its essence and dares to dream. In short, it
doesn’t waste energy or overindulge in Dushan’s impressive guitar skills. The
melodic neoclassical solos are there to elevate the compositions, while
Vescera’s performance brings the emotional depth each track demands.
It’s an album you can listen to straight through
without skipping a beat, packed with killer tracks like “Unleash the Dragon,”
“Temple of No Gods,” “Just a Good Man” (I dedicate this one to my father’s
memory), “Dark Night, Dark Thoughts” (the chorus reminded me of Stratovarius’
“Against The Wind”), and “King Without a Crown.”
If you’re into this genre, it’s definitely worth your
attention.
