Αλλαγή δε γίνεται χωρίς τους Riot.

Και τι αλλαγή! Ο Rhett Forrester στη θέση του Guy Speranza (RIP) είναι κάπως δύσκολο να τον αποδεχτεί το κοινό, αφού η φωνή του — ένα κράμα AC/DC και Def Leppard — δεν ταιριάζει απόλυτα εδώ. Το κίνημα (κολλάει κι η αλλαγή τώρα, ε;) του NWOBHM, που είχε φτάσει στη Νέα Υόρκη και γενικότερα στην αμερικανική σκηνή από το 1980 ως επιρροή, εδώ φαίνεται εξόφθαλμα λιγότερο απ’ ό,τι στο προηγούμενο τους Fire Down Under.

Το «κακό» — ή μάλλον η αντίθεση — είναι ότι ο Mark Reale (RIP) έγραψε κι αυτός πολύ πιο «αμερικάνικα», αν επιτραπεί ο όρος, απ’ ό,τι μας είχε συνηθίσει στα τρία πρώτα άλμπουμ. Κιθαριστικά, βέβαια, για μεγάλο μέρος του κόσμου, το έργο του παραμένει κλασικό και εδώ.

Αυτό το άλμπουμ, για μένα, ψιλοχάνει· είναι κατώτερο από τον θρυλικό προκάτοχό του, για να είμαστε δίκαιοι. Ευτυχώς, το μέλλον θα είναι καλύτερο — έστω και για έναν δίσκο ακόμα με τον Rhett.

Η διασκευή στους The Animals με το τρομερό When I Was Young είναι ο κράχτης του άλμπουμ. Από εκεί και πέρα, C.I.A. (ειρωνικό, αφού τα «σούρνει» στους πράκτορες εκ των έσω), Restless Breed, Violent Crimes και φυσικά ο ύμνος Loanshark είναι οι φωτεινές στιγμές του.

And what a change it was! Rhett Forrester stepping in for Guy Speranza (RIP) was a tough pill to swallow for many fans. His voice — somewhere between AC/DC and Def Leppard — doesn’t quite sit right in this context. The NWOBHM movement (fitting, given the lineup change, right?) that had made its way to New York and the broader American scene around 1980 as an influence, feels noticeably less present here than it did on their previous album, Fire Down Under.

The “problem” — or rather, the contrast — is that Mark Reale (RIP) also wrote in a much more “American” style this time around, if I may use the term, compared to what we were used to from the band’s first three albums. Guitar-wise, of course, his work is still considered classic by many, and rightfully so.

For me, this album kind of falls short — it’s clearly a step down from its legendary predecessor, to be fair. Thankfully, the future would hold better things — at least for one more album with Rhett.

The cover of The Animals’ explosive When I Was Young is the album’s standout hook. Beyond that, C.I.A. (ironically, since it takes shots at the agents from within), Restless Breed, Violent Crimes, and of course the anthem Loanshark are its brightest moments.
