REVIEW: GLYDER – Backroads to Byzantium

GLYDER – Backroads to Byzantium

SPV / Steamhammer Records

Irish rock band Glyder returns with their fourth full-length album, Backroads to Byzantium, offering a collection rooted firmly in classic rock traditions. The title may strike some as unconventional, but the music itself draws clear inspiration from the 1970s, echoing the styles of Rory Gallagher and Thin Lizzy.

The album features a blend of energetic rock tracks and more reflective moments. Standout uptempo songs such as “Long Gone” and “Fade to Dust” showcase the band’s ability to deliver driving rhythms and memorable riffs, while “Chronicled Deceit” adds a heavier, more aggressive edge. The closing track, “Motions of Time,” provides a mellow contrast, rounding out the album with a sense of calm.

Jackie Robinson’s vocal delivery is gritty and expressive, complementing the vintage rock aesthetic. Guitarists Bat Kinane and Pete Fisher contribute dynamic twin-guitar harmonies and solos that reinforce the album’s retro character. The production supports the material well, maintaining a raw yet polished sound that aligns with the genre’s roots.

Overall, Backroads to Byzantium is a homage to the golden era of rock, and listeners who appreciate 1970s guitar-driven music may find much to enjoy. Whether the album breaks new ground or simply revisits familiar territory is left for the audience to decide.
