SAVATAGE, The Wake Of Magellan (1997)

Η πεπατημένη έπλευσε και στη θάλασσα αυτή τη φορά.

Ένας βετεράνος γέρος ναυτικός αποφασίζει να πλεύσει στον ωκεανό μέχρι να βυθιστεί το σκάφος του, ώστε να τερματίσει τη κουραστική ζωή του. Θα σώσει, όμως, έναν άτυχο ναυαγό και, πλέοντας μαζί, θα καταλάβουν ο μεν ότι κάθε λεπτό αξίζει, ο δε ότι αν προσπαθήσει —έστω και για ένα δευτερόλεπτο— θα καταφέρει τελικά να πετύχει τους στόχους του.

Και ναι, μετά το απογοητευτικά άνοστο, υπερβολικά λυρικό και μάλλον άνευρο Dead Winter Dead (1995), οι έξι πλέον μουσικοί που σήκωναν στις πλάτες τους το μεγάλο όνομα των Savatage μετά τον θάνατο του αρχικού κιθαρίστα Criss Oliva, μας δίνουν απλόχερα ακόμα ένα θεματικό άλμπουμ. Ήταν μεγάλο σε διάρκεια (διπλό βινύλιο), αλλά κυρίως είχαν εδώ κάτι να πουν που άγγιζε τον κόσμο τους περισσότερο από πριν.

Ο Zak Stevens βρίσκεται για τελευταία φορά πίσω από το μικρόφωνο, ο Jon Oliva στα πλήκτρα και τα δεύτερα φωνητικά, οι Al Pitrelli και Chris Caffery στις κιθάρες, ο Johnny Lee Middleton στο μπάσο και ο Jeff Plate στα ντραμς — πάντα υπό την παραγωγή και τη συνεισφορά του Paul O'Neill (R.I.P.), του έβδομου ανεπίσημου μέλους τους. Αυτό ήταν το δεύτερο άλμπουμ τους με ιστιοφόρο στο εξώφυλλο (αν και το ντεμπούτο τους, Sirens, στην αρχική του μορφή είχε επίσης εξώφυλλο με πλοίο).

Φυσικά, μην περιμένεις να ακούσεις ένα δεύτερο Gutter Ballet ή Edge Of Thorns. Η prog rock/metal τεχνοτροπία είχε καταλάβει τα μέλη ήδη από πριν και, σε συνδυασμό με αρκετά ακουστικά μέρη στις κιθάρες, δίνει στον νέο ήχο τους μια πολύ ενδιαφέρουσα χροιά. Παρ' όλα αυτά, ψήγματα του παρελθόντος συναντώνται σε κομμάτια όπως τα «Paragons of Innocence» (με την ταλαιπωρημένη φωνή του Jon, ο οποίος ραπάρει στη μέση κιόλας!), «Morning Sun» και «Another Way». Επίσης, το εναρκτήριο «Welcome», καθώς και τα «Complaint In The System», «The Wake Of Magellan» και «The Hourglass», θα κρατήσουν τα αυτιά σας κολλημένα στον δίσκο.

The well-trodden path set sail on the open sea this time.

A veteran old sailor decides to navigate the ocean until his vessel sinks, hoping to end his weary life. However, he rescues an unfortunate shipwreck survivor. As they sail together, the former realizes that every single minute is precious, while the latter learns that by pushing forward—even for just one more second—he can ultimately achieve his goals.

And yes, following the disappointingly bland, overly lyrical, and rather lifeless Dead Winter Dead (1995), the six musicians shouldering the heavy legacy of Savatage after the passing of founding guitarist Criss Oliva generously deliver yet another concept album. It was a lengthy release (spanning a double vinyl), but most importantly, they had something to say here that resonated much deeper with their world than before.

This marks Zak Stevens' final appearance behind the microphone, alongside Jon Oliva on keyboards and backing vocals, Al Pitrelli and Chris Caffery on guitars, Johnny Lee Middleton on bass, and Jeff Plate on drums—all under the production and artistic contributions of their unofficial seventh member, Paul O'Neill (R.I.P.). This was their second album to feature a sailboat on the cover (though their debut, Sirens, originally featured a ship as well).

Of course, don't expect to hear a second Gutter Ballet or Edge Of Thorns. A progressive rock/metal style had already taken hold of the band earlier on, and combined with plenty of acoustic guitar passages, it lends a captivating texture to their evolved sound. Still, traces of their past linger in tracks like "Paragons of Innocence" (featuring Jon's weathered vocals, complete with him rapping mid-song!), "Morning Sun," and "Another Way." Additionally, the opening track "Welcome," along with "Complaint In The System," "The Wake Of Magellan," and "The Hourglass," will keep your ears glued to this record.
