Though founded in 2005, Dutch extreme metal veterans
Legion of the Damned are hardly newcomers to the scene, tracing their lineage
back to the relentless thrash/death output of Occult. Having first encountered
the band through their ferocious Cult of the Dead, I was instantly struck by the
sheer might of their compositions—a razor-sharp synthesis of old-school death
and Teutonic thrash metal, heavily spiked with classic Slayer-esque urgency.
Descent into Chaos (Massacre Records) once again
showcases the group’s indisputable technical prowess. The band excels at
delivering tight, punchy tracks built around infectious riffs and a
uncompromisingly solid rhythm section. On the vocal front, the delivery
seamlessly shifts between deep death metal growls and a bitter thrash snarl,
consistently amplifying the music's underlying hostility.
Ultimately, Descent into Chaos is a commendable effort
that honors both the band’s legacy and the conventions of the genre. Its
primary flaw lies in a degree of predictability; the songwriting adheres
closely to familiar templates, which subtly dampens the album's overall impact
without undermining its quality. It remains a fierce, solid entry in their
catalog, even if it plays it slightly too safe.
