Παλαίμαχοι ξανά στη μάχη. 

Ο Στέφανος, γνωστός με το καλλιτεχνικό Necroabyssious, είναι από μόνος του μία από τις πιο cult μορφές της ελληνικής black metal σκηνής και δίνει το παρόν στο χώρο από το 1988 με το σχήμα αυτό, ένα από τα παλαιότερα συγκροτήματα της ακραίας σκηνής, παλαιότεροι και από τους Rotting Christ, με τους οποίους ο ντράμερ Θέμης Τόλης και ο τότε μπασίστας Mutilator συνεργάστηκαν στο πρώτο τους Ε.P. και στο μυθικών διαστάσεων ντεμπούτο άλμπουμ των Varathron, το «His Majesty at the Swamp». Ακριβώς τριάντα χρόνια και κάμποσα άλμπουμ και Ε.P.s μετά, εδώ έχουμε το τελευταίο τους δίσκο. 

Ωριμότητα στην παραγωγή, στοιχεία της παραδοσιακής μουσικής της Ηπείρου (οι Varathron έχουν έδρα τα Γιάννενα), αλλά και καθαρά μοντέρνα αισθητική και ελληνική σχολή black metal, με αρκετά μελωδικά και μαγευτικά πλήκτρα, πολλά στοιχεία heavy/thrash metal στα riffs, σκοτεινές ενορχήστρωσεις και συνθέσεις που κρατούν το ενδιαφέρον του ακροατή. 

Ο πίνακας, γεμάτος αλληγορικούς συμβολισμούς και κοσμημένος το εξώφυλλο, είναι φτιαγμένος ειδικά για τον δίσκο σε στυλ των καλλιτεχνών της φλαμανδικής τεχνοτροπίας του 17ου αιώνα, θυμίζοντας με το παραπάνω τα εικαστικά έργα του Ιερώνυμου Μπος και συμβάλλοντας τα μέγιστα στην ηχητική και την ατμόσφαιρα του συνόλου. 

Πέραν του πλέον νοούμενου ως κλασικού «Crypts in the Mist», ξεχωρίζουν και τα «Cimmerian Priesthood», «Sinners of the Crimson Temple», «Hegemony of Chaos», «To the Gods of Yore», «Swamp King», «Constellation of the Archons».

Stefanos, known by his stage name Necroabyssious, is undoubtedly one of the most cult figures of the Greek black metal scene and has been active in the scene since 1988 with this band, making it one of the oldest acts in the extreme metal underground—older even than Rotting Christ, with whom drummer Thimis Tolis and the then-bassist Mutilator collaborated on their first EP and the legendary debut album of Varathron, “His Majesty at the Swamp”. 

Exactly thirty years and several albums and EPs later, we now have their latest release. 

Matured production, elements of traditional Epirus music (as Varathron are based in Ioannina), but also a distinctly modern aesthetic and Greek black metal school, featuring melodic and enchanting keyboards, numerous heavy/thrash metal riffs, dark orchestrations, and compositions that keep the listener engaged. 

The artwork, filled with allegorical symbols and adorned on the cover, was specially created for this album in the style of 17th-century Flemish painters, reminiscent of the works of Hieronymus Bosch and contributing significantly to the overall sonic atmosphere. 

Beyond the well-known “Crypts in the Mist”, standout tracks include “Cimmerian Priesthood”, “Sinners of the Crimson Temple”, “Hegemony of Chaos”, “To the Gods of Yore”, “Swamp King”, and “Constellation of the Archons”.
