Όπως λέμε ποπ, ναι αλλά στα '60s.

Είμαστε στη εποχή που τα παιδιά των λουλουδιών θα άλλαζαν τον κόσμο, (τελικά δεν τον άλλαξαν αλλά εν τέλει έγιναν κομμάτι του προβλήματος) οι νέοι ακόμα και φερέλπιδες Ritchie Blackmore, John Lord, Ian Paice, Nick Simper κι ο Σκωτσέζος τραγουδιστής τους Rod Evans στο δεύτερο άλμπουμ τους αυτής της περίεργης Mk.1 εκδοχής του συγκροτήματος συνεχίζουν απλά όσα άρχισαν στο Shades of Deep Purple ντεμπούτο τους μισό χρόνο πριν. Μη περιμένετε ένταση και Hard Rock επίπεδα που θα ανατριχιάσουν τον ακροατή. Η πιο pop προσέγγιση που έχουν μουσικά δε μας χαλάει. Κι εξάλλου, όλα ήταν σχετικά την εποχή αυτή και σίγουρα πολύ ρευστά. Πάντως το Kentucky Woman, του Neil Diamond σαν διασκευή λέει πολύ περισσότερο από την αρχική εκτέλεση. Το ορχηστρικό Wring That Neck είναι ένα σημάδι για το τί θέλουν να κάνουν ηχητικά παρακάτω στη καριέρα τους, ενώ τα Listen Learn Read on, Anthem, Shield κι η δεύτερη διασκευή στο River Deep Mountain High της Tina και του Ike Turner δε θα μας κάνουν καμία δυσάρεστη έκπληξη. Γενικά είναι να soft rock άλμπουμ, παιδί της εποχής που γράφτηκε αλλά και σίγουρα πολύ "ανεβαστικό" σαν σύνολο. Το ομότιτλο άλμπουμ που θα έρθει ένα χρόνο μετά θα κάνει πιο σαφή τα βήματα του σχήματος.

Like we say pop, yes, but in the '60s. 

We are in the era when the flower children would change the world (though ultimately they didn't, and ended up becoming part of the problem). The young, even promising musicians like Ritchie Blackmore, John Lord, Ian Paice, Nick Simper, and their Scottish vocalist Rod Evans, on their second album—this strange Mk.1 version of the band—simply continue what they started on their debut, "Shades of Deep Purple", half a year earlier. 

Don’t expect intense, hard rock levels that will send shivers down the listener’s spine. The more pop-oriented approach musically doesn’t bother us. Besides, everything was relative at the time and definitely very fluid. 

However, Neil Diamond’s "Kentucky Woman," in a cover version, says a lot more than the original recording. The instrumental "Wring That Neck" is a sign of what they want to do sonically further down the line in their career, while tracks like "Listen Learn Read On," "Anthem," "Shield," and the second cover of Tina Turner and Ike Turner’s "River Deep Mountain High" won’t surprise us in any unpleasant way. 

Overall, it’s a soft rock album, a product of its time, but also very uplifting as a whole. The self-titled album that will come a year later will make the band’s next steps clearer.
