REVIEW: FIREFORCE – March On

FIREFORCE – March On

On March 25, 2011, the debut album of Belgian heavy/power metallers FIREFORCE was released. This date (referring to the day and the month) marks the beginning of the Greek War of Independence against the Ottoman Empire, according to Greek mythology. It's also a significant date if you're a supporter of Aris Thessaloniki. In any case, this day is important for FIREFORCE as well, since they launched their debut with the exceptionally RUNNING WILD-esque title "March On."

The more I listen to this release, the more I find it outstanding. It's dynamic heavy/power metal built on powerful riffs, a solid rhythm section, and of course, characteristic melodies. They may not be playing anything we haven't heard before, but they do it exceptionally well and convincingly. They make you believe in their genuine intentions and showcase the passion of fans who want to create music inspired by their childhood heroes.

I would say their influences lean more towards the Teutonic metal sound, drawing from bands like GRAVE DIGGER, ACCEPT, PARAGON, and RUNNING WILD, but they also have moments that lean American, reminiscent of HELSTAR. Furthermore, they share a sonic affinity with MYSTIC PROPHECY, which is no surprise given that the production was handled by Dimitris Liapakis. This isn't the only Greek element present in this album; many solo sections of the compositions are heavily influenced by Greek music, thanks to the guest participation of Greek guitarist Constantine, who was also a member of MYSTIC PROPHECY at that time.

So, if you enjoy enthusiastic heavy/power metal with a strong Teutonic aesthetic, then this is a release you definitely shouldn’t miss checking out.
