Μετά την εποχή της επανένωσης με τον κλασικό τραγουδιστή Tony Moore και τον «ντράμερ–χταπόδι» Bobby Jarzombek, το Immortal Soul του 2011 επανέφερε τον αέρα της Thundersteel και της The Privilege of Power περιόδου. Οι Riot έμοιαζαν να γλεντούν τη δεύτερη —ή καλύτερα την τρίτη— νεότητά τους. Όλα πήγαιναν καλά, μέχρι την αποφράδα μέρα που διαβάσαμε ότι ο αρχηγός, κιθαρίστας και βασικός συνθέτης του συγκροτήματος, ο αξέχαστος Mark Reale, έφυγε για πάντα από κοντά μας, χτυπημένος από ασθένεια.

Κάθε μπάντα θα σταματούσε, όπως θα ήταν λογικό, χωρίς τον βασικό της στυλοβάτη και ηγέτη. Έχοντας όμως την πεποίθηση ότι ο Mark θα το ήθελε, η οικογένειά του έδωσε την ευλογία της στα εναπομείναντα μέλη, Mike Flyntz (κιθάρα) και Don Van Stavern (μπάσο). Λίγο καιρό αργότερα, το σχήμα ανανεώθηκε με τους Todd Michael Hall στη φωνή, Frank Gilchriest (Virgin Steele) στα τύμπανα και τον Nick Lee στη δεύτερη κιθάρα.

Η πέμπτη ενσάρκωση του συγκροτήματος ήταν πλέον γεγονός. Για να μη θεωρηθεί από τον κόσμο και τον μουσικό τύπο ότι πρόκειται για εκμετάλλευση της κατάστασης, το νέο σχήμα προσέθεσε το λατινικό νούμερο V (5), αλλάζοντας το όνομα σε Riot V.

Αυτό το CD που γράφτηκε τότε, πάντως, δεν το περιμέναμε. Κάποιοι το χαρακτήρισαν «αρπαχτή», αλλά τελικά, ακούγοντάς το —και ειδικά τον νέο τραγουδιστή— καταλαβαίνεις εύκολα ότι οι Riot V είναι η φυσική συνέχεια ενός θρυλικού σχήματος. Η μουσική παραμένει στο U.S. Power Metal ύφος, αλλά με έναν ελαφρώς πιο ευρωπαϊκό μανδύα, και στα δώδεκα κομμάτια του δίσκου το συγκρότημα αγγίζει το σχεδόν άριστο 9/10.

Ride Hard Ride Free, Metal Warrior, Fall from the Sky, Bring the Hammer Down, Unleash the Fire, Land of the Rising Sun (φόρος τιμής στους Ιάπωνες οπαδούς), Kill to Survive, Return of the Outlaw, Immortal (αφιερωμένο στον Mark Reale), Take Me Back, Until We Meet Again — σχεδόν όλα τα τραγούδια του δίσκου αξίζουν πολύ περισσότερα από μια απλή ακρόαση.

A Phoenix in Every Sense of the Word

After reuniting with classic vocalist Tony Moore and “octopus‑drummer” Bobby Jarzombek, 2011’s Immortal Soul brought back the unmistakable spirit of the Thundersteel and The Privilege of Power era. Riot seemed to be reveling in a second—perhaps even a third—youth. Everything was moving forward beautifully, until the devastating day we learned that the band’s leader, guitarist, and principal songwriter, the unforgettable Mark Reale, had passed away after a long battle with illness.

Any band would have reasonably called it quits after losing its cornerstone and guiding force. But convinced that Mark would have wanted the music to live on, his family gave their blessing to the remaining members, Mike Flyntz (guitar) and Don Van Stavern (bass). Not long after, the lineup was revitalized with Todd Michael Hall on vocals, Frank Gilchriest (Virgin Steele) on drums, and Nick Lee as second guitarist.

Thus, the band’s fifth incarnation became a reality. To avoid any impression—among fans or the music press—that they were exploiting the situation, the new lineup added the Roman numeral V (5), adopting the name Riot V.

What we didn’t expect was the album that followed. Some dismissed it as a quick cash‑grab, but once you actually listen—especially to the new vocalist—it becomes clear that Riot V are the natural continuation of a legendary band. The music stays firmly rooted in U.S. Power Metal, but with a slightly more European sheen, and across its twelve tracks the band delivers something close to a 9/10.
