KITTIE
– I've Failed You
Massacre Records
KITTIE returns with their sixth studio album, “I've
Failed You”, serving as a follow-up to their 2009 release, “In the Black”.
Notably, both albums feature the same lineup, suggesting a consistency in their
creative chemistry. Musically, “I've Failed You” continues in a similar vein to
its predecessor, with a slightly darker tone and a more groove-oriented
approach.
While often categorized under the nu-metal genre,
KITTIE's sound defies strict labeling, incorporating diverse elements from
various metal subgenres. The album predominantly features modern metal with
distorted vocals and down-tuned guitars, alongside influences from melodic
death metal and thrash metal, contributing to its intense and aggressive
profile. Additionally, the band explores contrasting textures by incorporating
mellow sections, including clean vocals, acoustic guitars, and melodic
passages. However, these softer elements are less central to the album's
overall impact.
From a stylistic standpoint, the core strength of “I've
Failed You” lies in its aggressive, high-energy compositions. The band
demonstrates a proficiency in delivering heavy, riff-driven music with a
commanding rhythm section and dynamic songwriting. Special recognition is due
to the lead guitarist, whose technical and melodic solos are both elaborate and
tasteful, adding depth without overshadowing the overall momentum.
Overall, “I've Failed You” stands as a solid
contribution to modern melodic death/thrash metal. Its effectiveness could be
further enhanced by minimizing the mellower, alternative-influenced segments,
allowing the band’s aggressive and heavy side to take full precedence. KITTIE
continues to deliver powerful, uncompromising music, and a focus on their more
extreme elements would likely resonate more strongly with their core sound.
