Since their inception in 1998, Stormhunter has been a band that prides itself on taking its time, crafting music with substance rather than succumbing to industry pressures. "Best Before: Death," their fourth full-length album, arrives a decade after their previous effort, "An Eye For An I," with two EPs punctuating the interim. This lengthy gestation period has clearly allowed the band to refine their craft and deliver a polished offering.

From its roots heavily influenced by acts like Running Wild and early Helloween, Stormhunter has evolved its sound while retaining its distinctive personality. With "Best Before: Death," they continue to pay homage to their influences while venturing into new territories. The album is a testament to German heavy/power/speed metal, featuring nods to iconic bands throughout its tracks.

The opening instrumental, "Morituri Te Salutant," sets the tone with a nod to Running Wild, while tracks like "Reaper" evoke echoes of Gamma Ray and Helloween. "Nightmare" channels the energy of Judas Priest's "Painkiller" era, while "Fallen Angel" introduces atmospheric elements reminiscent of Orden Ogan.

The inclusion of French lyrics in "Berceau De L'Enfer" pays tribute to ADX, showcasing the band's appreciation for their peers. "Vagabond" ventures into Blind Guardian territory, particularly from the "Somewhere Far Beyond" era, while "War Is Peace" exudes a Sacred Steel-Running Wild vibe.

"Best Before: Death" is more than just a collection of influences; it's a testament to Stormhunter's maturity as musicians. Despite the diverse range of inspirations, the band's passion shines through, resulting in a cohesive and engaging listening experience.

One notable aspect of the album is its deeply personal lyrics, marking a departure from previous releases. Drawing from their own experiences, the band members infuse each track with authenticity and emotion, adding an extra layer of depth to the music.

In conclusion, "Best Before: Death" is a must-listen for fans of German heavy/power/speed metal. Stormhunter has delivered a mature and passionate album that pays homage to their influences while forging their own path forward. With its blend of nostalgia and innovation, this release cements Stormhunter's place in the pantheon of metal excellence.
