Have you ever made a
thought starting with the preposition “what if?” If you haven’t I think it is
something that you should try. A lot of beautiful and creative thoughts can
come from this. So imagine if in the medieval times electricity existed and
heavy metal music was invented. How would the songs from that era sound? This
is pretty much how KANSEIL from Italy thought and were formed back in 2010 and
this album which means “your land” is their answer to their own “what if”.
THE COVER: It has soft and beautiful colors and an image that fits
perfectly to a folk metal band. On the background you can see mountains and in
front a tree which has its roots upon a rock. The beauty of this cover shines
through its simplicity.
MUSICAL STYLE: I have already mentioned that KANSEIL belong to the
folk metal genre, but their sound is very detailed and combines quite a lot of
different musical styles. They have the folk melodies that come from their
country, but there is also a strong Celtic and Teutonic folk vibe in their
melodies. Sometimes their music also flirts with medieval tunes that make you
think of other eras long gone. Besides the folk melodies which are the melodic
part of their sound, KANSEIL have a heavy face too and this is expressed
through the black and melodic death metal riffs that exist in the whole
release. KANSEIL musically and lyrically might draw influence from the ancient
times, but their songs and especially their lyrics can work also as parables
for our modern society.
COMPOSITIONS: In this release you will have the opportunity to
listen to 11 compositions which are a mixture of folk melodies with death/black
metal riffs. The album has variety and a convincing atmosphere that can make
the listener escape for a little from our modern world, but it can also make
him/her think about the world we live in today (times might change, but humans
not so much). In my opinion the fans of bands like IN EXTREMO, FOLKSTONE,
ELUVEITIE and WAYLANDER will enjoy this album.
CONCLUSION: I know that in our days there are too many releases
from each genre out there and it is hard to listen to them all, but in my
opinion KANSEIL in their debut album offer us some good folk metal tunes which
are not catchy and demand to give them some time and attention to fully enjoy
them. In their debut album they have proven themselves worthy and I hope to see
them releasing even better albums than this one. I will recommend this release
to folk metal fans that don’t search for cheap thrills, but for music with
essence.
