FERGIE
FREDERIKSEN – Happiness Is the Road
Frontiers Records
Dennis “Fergie” Frederiksen, renowned for his role as
lead singer of TOTO during the 1984 album “Isolation”, brings a compelling
addition to his discography with “Happiness Is the Road”. Beyond TOTO,
Frederiksen's career includes collaborations with bands such as Leroux,
Trillion, and Mecca, establishing him as a respected figure within the melodic
rock and AOR genres.
This album was notably shaped during a challenging
period in Frederiksen’s life. Diagnosed with cancer in 2010, Frederiksen
demonstrated resilience and dedication by entering the studio with producer and
multi-instrumentalist Dennis Ward. Ward’s involvement was instrumental, as he
contributed guitar, bass, keyboards, and backing vocals, effectively shaping
the album’s sound. The collaboration also features a guest appearance by Jim
Peterik of Survivor fame on the title track.
Following a year of treatment, Frederiksen emerged
cancer-free, channeling his experience into this release. “Happiness Is the
Road” presents a collection of well-crafted melodic rock and AOR songs,
balancing energetic tracks with heartfelt ballads.
The album opens strongly with “Angel (Mirror to Your
Soul)” and “Elaine,” the latter of which has garnered attention as a potential
hit. Up-tempo tracks such as the title song and “Writing on the Wall” exemplify
Frederiksen’s melodic sensibility, while “Lyin’ Eyes” and “Love Waits for No
One” showcase strong songwriting with memorable choruses. The emotional ballad
“Follow Your Heart” features a notably compelling vocal performance from
Frederiksen, highlighting his ability to convey deep emotion.
Toward the conclusion, the album revisits a classic
sound with “The One” and “The Saviour,” both of which evoke elements
reminiscent of Frederiksen’s work with TOTO. Overall, “Happiness Is the Road”
offers a cohesive listening experience that combines melodic craftsmanship with
personal storytelling.
In summary, “Happiness Is the Road” is a noteworthy
addition to Frederiksen’s catalog, reflecting both his artistic talent and his
resilience. While rooted in traditional melodic rock and AOR styles, the
album’s emotional depth and strong songwriting make it a recommended listen for
fans of the genre, as well as those interested in a story of perseverance and
artistic renewal.
