Ο Martin Walkier μπροστά στο μικρόφωνο "ψευδίζει" τα λόγια με άριστο βρετανικό φλέγμα ντύνοντας τις ξέφρενες μουσικές τους. Το τέταρτο των Βρετανών folk/speed/ heavy κι εγώ δε ξέρω τί άλλο πρόθεμα, metalers. Οι "ουρανοντυμενοι" ίσως στον τελευταίο κλασικό δίσκο τους πριν γίνουν καθαρά folk. Όχι ότι με χαλάνε τα μεταγενέστερα, αλλά λέμε! Civil War Dance, Cardboard City, Sins of Emmision, Land of the Rising Slum,  The One Piece Puzzle είναι ανεπανάληπτα έπη εδώ.

Representing a unique blend of one-fourth British folk, speed, heavy, and an array of other prefixes, these metalers stand out. The 'heavenly dressed,' possibly in their final classic album before transitioning to a pure folk sound, captivate listeners.

It's not that I disregard their subsequent works, but let's savor the classics! Tracks like 'Civil War Dance,' 'Cardboard City,' 'Sins of Emission,' 'Land of the Rising Slum,' and 'The One Piece Puzzle' stand as unparalleled epics in this musical journey.

I believe this album received unfair treatment from critics, despite some decent ratings. It seamlessly picks up where "Whisper Supremacy" left off, completing the musical journey for me. Although it's just over 30 minutes long, it assaults the eardrums like its predecessor. I thoroughly enjoyed it and showed my support by purchasing the CD—every bit helps in this age of streaming that has artists struggling.

"As Gomorrah Burns" features pounding beats, lethal guitar pieces, and a lack of overlapping songs, maintaining a consistently high intensity. The guitar harmonics are particularly noteworthy. If extreme death metal appeals to you, it's definitely worth checking out.

The vocals differ a bit, with what sounds like two contributors, adding a unique dimension compared to "Whisper..." Yet, it complements the onslaught of this recording perfectly. The album doesn't relent in intensity, a characteristic I appreciated.

What kept me hooked wasn't just the intensity, but also the guitars, vocals, and overall sound. The frequent tempo changes, reminiscent of "Whisper...," added to the appeal. The crunch guitars, with their killer distortion, stood out. The drums complemented the guitars well, showcasing a well-thought concept of what "extreme" truly means.

Critiquing this release negatively seems unjust when, in reality, it offers top-notch death metal that immerses you in abhorrent sickness. They've created a sonic assault akin to other extreme acts like newer Exhumed. The pace never lets up, and the production quality is commendable.

The guitars, dominating with their tempos, leads, distortion, and harmonics, were especially enjoyable. The vocal variety, alternating between low bello growls and screams, added an engaging element lacking in "Whisper...," at least in my opinion. This album stands out as one of the best in 2023, packed with substance that blew me away. I encourage not just downloading but buying it to support the death metal community. For those without CD players, find a way to give it a listen—this is a release worth experiencing in some form!

METHEDRAS stands tall among Italy's top metal bands, a relentless force in thrash-death metal. With a history spanning demos, six albums, and countless global tours (including support for icons like Slayer and Anthrax), they maintain a fierce energy.

Formed in 1996 near Milan, the band's evolution settled into a distinctive style—a blend of Bay Area thrash and Scandinavian death metal, modernized with synths for a melodic rock touch.

Despite past collaborations with labels like Punishment 18, Pavement Entertainment, and Massacre Records, Methedras chose to self-release their latest album, "Human Deception," in June 2023. Recorded at Sweden's Studio Fredman under the guidance of Fredrik Nordström, the album features the single "Psychotic."

Το δεύτερο (τύποις τρίτο με το On Parole να αποτελεί alter ego του ντεμπούτου Motorhead!)  της "Αγίας Τριάδας" Lemmy, Clarke, Taylor. Τι να ξαναλέμε; -No Motorhead, no Metallica είχε πει ο Lars Ulrich. Ίσως το πρώτο σε επιδραστικότητα  άλμπουμ τους σε βαθμό που η συνέχεια της ιστορίας τους να μην είχε την εξέλιξη που όλοι ξέρουμε, αν δεν υπήρχε αυτό. Overkill, No Class, Capricorn, Damage Case, Metropolis, No Class, Stay Clean μας το φωνάζουν κάθε φορά που παίρνει θέση στο στερεοφωνικό μας.

Μας άρεσαν πριν, με αυτό τους λάτρεψε όλος ντουνιάς! Η κορυφή των δίσκων τους. Άντε και το επόμενο Visions, μετά όχι το χάος αλλά η μπαταρία ξεφόρτισε. Δεκαρι μην πω δωδεκαρι αυτό το άλμπουμ. Οι τρεις power metal ύμνοι Father Time, Will The Sun Rise?, Speed Of Light είναι η σημαία αυτού του cd ακριβώς στο κέντρο της χρυσής εποχής των Φιλανδών (τρεις Φιλανδοί, ένας Γερμανός κι ένας Σουηδός για την ακρίβεια, σαν ανέκδοτο!). Εκτός των της μουσικής αυτό είναι και το τελευταίο εξώφυλλο δίσκου τους που θα δούμε το "παλιό" αγαπημένο λογότυπο του συγκροτήματος. Απ' το Visions θα αλλάξει στο τελείως στο άγευστο, νέο τους που ακόμα και σήμερα παραλλαγμένο κάπως, χρησιμοποιούν.

Brace yourselves for a seismic visual shift post-'Visions,' as they embrace a bold, albeit slightly altered, new logo that continues to define their contemporary identity.

While I acknowledge the appeal of modern power metal, there's a nostalgia within me for the classic '90s sound that defined my musical roots. PALANTIR's EP effortlessly transports me back to that era, reminiscent of bands like EDGUY, HAMMERFALL, and RHAPSODY whose albums still captivate me.

The seven tracks in this release showcase skillful and traditional power metal. The lyrics oscillate between optimism and introspection, fittingly earning the EP its title, 'Nightmare Opus.' PALANTIR skillfully explores symphonic power metal, evoking the early works of RHAPSODY, and even incorporates elements reminiscent of DRAGONFORCE's Nintendo power metal.

This release, with its diverse influences, strikes a perfect balance between nostalgia and contemporary resonance. For those craving dynamic and melodic metal true to the genre, PALANTIR's EP proves to be a worthwhile investment.

A truly charismatic band seamlessly fusing two distinct genres, their live performances are a testament to their musical prowess. What sets them apart is their unique identity, avoiding imitation and embodying metal in a way that stands alone. The interplay of distinctive riffs and expert songwriting is elevated by vocals that harmonize effortlessly. With an anticipation for a continuous stream of innovative albums, their recent tour with Mayhem showcased a stellar performance, even if it didn't overshadow the headliner.

The band's dynamism and top-notch riff-writing define their latest studio release, a concise 34-minute triumph where every moment leaves an indelible mark. The standout feature? Undoubtedly, the electrifying guitar riffs that permeate every track, seamlessly combining catchiness with uniqueness. The intentional dominance in guitar work reflects the band members' ultra-creative prowess, even though the leads may pose a slight drawback.

Nevertheless, the overall production quality remains commendable, contributing to a well-rounded album that leaves a lasting impression. Having witnessed their live show, I'm thrilled about picking up this album. Despite my unfamiliarity with their older work, consistent ratings suggest a legacy of quality. Overcoming the challenge of drawing crowds, this black/speed metal band has thrived, with their live performance authentically resonating with the album. Their mastery of guitar riffs within a dual-genre landscape makes them undeniably phenomenal!

Φόρος τιμής σε πάρα πολλούς.

Οι μπάντα από το Οχάιο αυτή έχει λίγα χρόνια στη πλάτη της και αυτό είναι το δεύτερο πλήρες άλμπουμ τους, έχοντας κι ένα Ε.Ρ.

Κρίνοντας από το εξώφυλλο, βλέπεις που το πάνε το πράγμα μουσικά, ένα πολυσυλλεκτικό Power Metal κράμα, με πάρα πολλές επικές στιγμές. Ηχητικά δε μπορώ να τους κατατάξω στον αμερικάνικο ήχο, έχουν αρκετά Euro-power στοιχεία αλλά και απο την άλλη, σε μερικά σημεία καταλαβαίνεις ότι οι Manilla Road, οι Omen, οι Jag Panzer τους έχουν στοιχειώσει συνθετικά. Στα δέκα κομμάτια του Valkyrie, υπάρχουν στιγμές που θα ικανοποιήσουν τον φίλο τόσο του Epic, όσο και του Power Metal γενικά άρα μιλάμε για μια αξιόλογη προσπάθεια που σε κρατάει να ακούσεις όλο το CD. Ξεχώρισα το τρομερό Archangels, τα Dragon Blood, Prince Of The Moon, Saints & Heretics, Paradiso και το ομώνυμο Valkyrie. Πολύ ενθαρρυντική τέλος, είναι η  προσπάθεια να ακουστούν κάπως "cult" σαν παραγωγή. Δε ξέρω αν βγαίνει εσκεμμένα αλλά συγκαταλέγεται στα θετικά του δίσκου. Μακάρι να περάσουν από ευρωπαϊκά φεστιβάλ, θα ήταν πολύ ενδιαφέρουσα προσθήκη στα billing!

While initially perceived as a new entrant, a swift online inquiry unveiled that the Germans of DARK SKY have been a consistent force since their formation in 1982, steering clear of disbandment or hiatus. Their latest offering, 'Signs of the Time,' released in August 2023, masterfully balances rich melodies with a potent dynamism, featuring compositions that traverse a spectrum of emotions and influences.

DARK SKY's musical essence can be succinctly defined as melodic heavy metal, skillfully interwoven with elements of hard rock and AOR influences. During dynamic phases, their sound veers into the territory of melodic power metal.

To convey a sense of their sonic identity, inevitable comparisons arise with well-established counterparts. The initial resonance with PRETTY MAIDS is evident, alongside parallels to early DOMAIN, later EDGUY, and AVANTASIA. This isn't to undermine their individuality but to provide readers a glimpse into the sonic landscape awaiting them.

Αυτό είναι το τέταρτο πλήρες άλμπουμ τους και μία ακόμη υπογράμμιση της ποιότητας που διέπει τη πλειονότητα της ελληνικής σκηνής μετά το 2000. Οι έξι μουσικοί που απαρτίζουν τους Fortress Under Siege, αποδίδουν εδώ έναν μεστό και μελωδικό Power Metal ήχο, που ειδικά στα κομμάτια από τη μέση του άλμπουμ και μετά κρύβει και κάποιες Progressive νότες π.χ. στα Disobey και στο ομώνυμο του δίσκου. Στα συνολικά δέκα τραγούδια που απαρτίζουν το Envy, μπορεί κανείς να βρεί ό, τί θα έψαχνε από ένα σύγχρονο κι έμπειρο πλέον σχήμα , που χωρίς να "κλασσικίζει", δίνει τόσο σύγχρονα όσο και πιο παλιομοδίτικα χρώματα στον ακροατή και με πλήκτρα που χωρίς να μονοπωλούν έχουν να προσθέσουν κι αυτά πολύ, έχοντας σύγχρονη και καλογυαλισμένη παραγωγή που φυσικά, βοηθά παραπάνω στον μελωδικό metal ήχο τους. Το Bring Your Dead που κάνει την αρχή ακολουθείται από τα Ride The Thunder, το Distant Voices (που θα έλεγα πως είναι το πιο παλιάς σχολής κομμάτι), Look At You, Disobey, Envy , Broken And Torn, Deceptor Straights Of Glory και το τελικό Burning Fleshes.  Αν αρεσκεστε στις μελωδίες και τα χαρακτηριστικά riff των Sonata Arctica, Inner Wish, Stratovarius επενδύετε σε αυτό χωρίς δεύτερη σκέψη

Πέρασμα στο Άβατο του Power Realm

Έπειτα από τέσσερα χρόνια μετά την κυκλοφορία του Realms of Time (2019) οι Diviner επέστρεψαν με τον τρίτο τους δίσκο ο οποίος από το πρώτο άκουσμα θα βάλει τον ακροατή σε ένα χείμαρρο συναισθημάτων με οδηγό την φωνή του Γιάννη Παπανικολάου και τις υπέροχες συνθέσεις της μπάντας.

Ο δίσκος ξεκινά με ένα ορχηστρικό κομμάτι, το Avaton που αποτελεί εισαγωγή, για να ακολουθήσει το Mountains High ένα heavy power κομμάτι που θα βάλει τις βάσεις για το ύφος του δίσκου. Ακολουθεί το Dancing In The Fire, τραγούδι το οποίο θυμίζει παλαιότερες συνθέσεις της μπάντας το οποίο ήταν αρκετά ξεσηκωτικό για το Live που έγινε στο Κύτταρο στις 18 Νοέμβρη.

Ακολουθούν κομμάτια που αναδεικνύουν εμφανώς τις επιρροές του συγκροτήματος όπως το “Maidenικό”  Cyberwar, το εξαιρετικό Waste No Time, ενώ ακολουθούν στο ίδιο ύφος κομμάτια που ακούγονται ευχάριστα όπως τα Nemesic και Hope Will Rise. Ο δίσκος κλείνει με 3 επίσης καταπληκτικά τραγούδια, το Dominator το οποίο μοιάζει με κομμάτι που ήταν χαμένο σε κάποια best of συλλογή του Ronnie James Dio και τα 2 έπη, το Hall Of The Brave που έχει διάρκεια 8 λεπτά, μια σύνθεση με αρκετά λυρικό ύφος στην οποία διακρίνεται το συνθετικό ταλέντο της μπάντας αλλά ουσιαστικά αποτελεί εισαγωγή για το απόλυτο έπος που κλείνει τον δίσκο και ονομάζεται The Battle of Marathon. Μια σύνθεση που εξιστορεί την μάχη του Μαραθώνα με το χαρακτηριστικό ύφος της μπάντας το οποίο και κλείνει με αναφορά στο επίγραμμα που υπάρχει στον τύμβο που έστησαν οι Αθηναίοι το 490π.χ. μετά την νίκη τους επί των Περσών.

Πρόκειται για ένα απαιτητικό κομμάτι, όπως το χαρακτήρισε στο Live ο Παπανικολάου και υποσχέθηκε ότι θα παίξει σε επόμενη συναυλία καθώς χρειάζεται ιδιαίτερη προετοιμασία.

Συνολικά έχουμε να κάνουμε με έναν δίσκο, ο οποίος βασίζεται σε κλασικά πρότυπα του ιδιώματος αλλά καταφέρνει με το διακριτό μεράκι, το ταλέντο των μουσικών και την ποιότητα των συνθέσεων να κερδίζει τόσο άμεσα με τραγούδια ανάλογα του ύφους της μπάντας όσο και σε βάθος χρόνου τον ακροατή.

Σε όλη την μπάντα αξίζουν συγχαρητήρια, από τον Λευτέρη Μώρο στα ντράμς, τους Alex Flouros και Teo Ross στις κιθάρες, τον Γιώργο Νιδριώτη στο μπάσο και φυσικά τον Γιάννη Παπανικολάου στα φωνητικά.

Αναμφίβολα πρόκειται για έναν από τους καλύτερους δίσκους metal που έχει να επιδείξει η Ελληνική σκηνή φέτος.

Four years since Realms of Time's unveiling in 2019, Diviner makes a triumphant return with their third album. From the first notes, this musical odyssey immerses listeners in a cascade of emotions guided by Giannis Papanikolaou's commanding vocals and the band's exquisite compositions.

The album begins with the majestic orchestral prelude, "Avaton," seamlessly transitioning into the robust "Mountains High," setting the stage for the album's sonic landscape. Following is "Dancing In The Fire," an electrifying composition witnessed at the live performance on November 18th at Kyttaro.

Subsequent tracks expertly showcase the band's influences, with the "Maiden-esque" Cyberwar and the exceptional "Waste No Time." The album continues its captivating journey with delightful tracks like "Nemesic" and "Hope Will Rise." A grand finale awaits with three extraordinary pieces: "Dominator," reminiscent of a lost gem from a Ronnie James Dio compilation, and two epic tracks—"Hall Of The Brave" (clocking in at 8 minutes) and "The Battle of Marathon," a poignant narrative closing the album with a nod to the inscription on the Athenians' tomb erected in 490 BC after their triumph over the Persians.

"The Battle of Marathon" is aptly described by Papanikolaou as a demanding masterpiece, promising future concerts given the meticulous preparation it requires.

In its entirety, this album not only adheres to classic genre standards but elevates itself through a unique blend of passion, musical prowess, and quality compositions. It captivates listeners immediately with tracks true to the band's style and continues to enthrall over time.

Commendations to the entire ensemble—from Lefteris Moros on drums, Alex Flouros and Teo Ross on guitars, to George Nidriotis on bass, and, of course, Giannis Papanikolaou on vocals.

Without a doubt, this stands as one of the finest metal albums gracing the Greek music scene this year.
