REVIEW: TANK, Filth Hounds Of Hell

TANK, Filth Hounds Of Hell (1982)

Kamaflage Records

Ο Algy Ward σε μπάσο και φωνή, κι οι αδερφοί Brabbs, ο Peter με κιθάρα και ο Mark στα τύμπανα, σε έναν κατακλυσμό MWOBHM ύμνων όπως τα Shellshock, Struck by Lightning, Run Like Hell, Blood Guts and Beer, Turn Your Head Around, Heavy Artillery, Filth Hounds of Hell, He Fell in Love (With a Stormtrooper), που μας θυμίζουν ξανά και ξανά ότι αυτές οι εποχές πέρασαν για πάντα, αλλά παραμένουν στο μεταλλικό Πάνθεον.

English:

Like a 1000cc motorcycle.

The producer of this album was Fast Eddie Clark (RIP), the legendary guitarist from Motörhead. I don't know if he was the decisive factor that made the debut of the three Brits sound so close to the tone of that other huge trio of hard and dirty Heavy Rock! Algy Ward on bass and vocals, and the Brabbs brothers — Peter on guitar and Mark on drums — in a deluge of NWOBHM anthems like Shellshock, Struck by Lightning, Run Like Hell, Blood Guts and Beer, Turn Your Head Around, Heavy Artillery, Filth Hounds of Hell, He Fell in Love (With a Stormtrooper), reminding us again and again that those eras are gone forever, but remain in the metallic Pantheon.

I always confuse this album's cover in my mind with the American one, and sonically, it’s very close to The Rods' Tank, which came out the same year as the also divine Wild Dogs... The three dogs on both covers, indeed.

REVIEW: SONIC PROPHECY - A Divine Act of War

SONIC PROPHECY - A Divine Act of War

Independent

Sonic Prophecy is a relatively new band originating from Utah, USA, presenting their debut album titled A Divine Act of War. The band previously released an EP in 2009, simply titled 2009 EP, which was well-received and showcased their ability to craft energetic power metal with a distinctive style.

This latest work marks a notable stylistic shift from their earlier sound. The band has transitioned from a straightforward power metal approach to a more symphonic power metal style, emphasizing orchestral and symphonic elements within their compositions. The album demonstrates a competent integration of these elements, showcasing the band's musical growth and production capabilities. Notably, the album's sound quality surpasses that of their earlier EP, and it includes a 16-page full-color booklet, a feature that is somewhat uncommon for independently released material.

The album maintains a cohesive flow, and certain guitar riffs and motifs that characterized their initial work are still present, providing some continuity for fans of their earlier style. Among the tracks, “Call of Battle” and “Canticle” stand out as highlights due to their impactful arrangements and engaging melodies.

While the album’s emphasis on symphonic elements may appeal most to fans of symphonic metal, it is worth noting that the band executes this style with proficiency. However, personal preferences regarding symphonic metal may influence individual reception. For listeners who appreciate well-played symphonic or melodic metal, this release offers a solid example of the genre, with competent musicianship and attention to production.

In summary, Sonic Prophecy emerges as a promising new band capable of adapting and executing different metal styles effectively. Their dedication to their craft is evident, and whether one prefers their original power metal or their current symphonic direction, their musicianship is commendable. Fans of symphonic metal are likely to find this album a worthwhile addition to their collection.

REVIEW: QUIET RΙOT, Condition Critical

QUIET RΙOT, Condition Critical (1984)

Pasha

Οι Kevin DuBrow (φωνή), Rudi Sarzo (μπάσο), Carlos Cavazo (κιθάρα) και ο ντράμερ Frankie Banali, που σε λίγα χρόνια θα μεταπηδήσει στους W.A.S.P., παίζουν σε μερικά ακόμα σχεδόν κλασικά κομμάτια και μια ακόμα διασκευή στο "Mama Weer All Crazy Now" των Slade.

Πάντως, και εδώ υπάρχουν στιγμές σαν τα "Party All Night", "Sign of the Times", "Winners Take All", "Condition Critical", "Scream And Shout", "Red Alert" και "(We Were) Born To Rock", οι οποίες το κατατάσσουν στα καλά της εν τη γενέσει της glam/hair metal σκηνής.

English:

You can't repeat the impossible.

And so, a year after the band's huge success with the vast and successful Metal Health, they returned to claim the laurels once again. However, here, although they try to craft the second part of their previous album, they don't quite succeed.

Kevin DuBrow (vocals), Rudi Sarzo (bass), Carlos Cavazo (guitar), and Frankie Banali on drums—who will join W.A.S.P. in a few years—play on a few more almost classic tracks and another cover of Slade's "Mama Weer All Crazy Now."

I don't know if it's exhaustion from their explosive rise a year earlier that knocked them down or made them bored, but even here, there are moments like "Party All Night," "Sign of the Times," "Winners Take All," "Condition Critical," "Scream And Shout," "Red Alert," and "(We Were) Born To Rock," which place this album among the good early examples of glam/hair metal.

REVIEW: CAPTAIN BEYOND, Captain Beyond

CAPTAIN BEYOND, Captain Beyond  (1972)

Capricorn Records

Αν είστε μεγαλύτερης γενιάς, ίσως να θυμάστε τους Iron Butterfly με το χιτ τους In a Gadda Da Vida στα τέλη του, πόσο; 1969; Κάπου εκεί.

Ύμνοι όπως το Mesmerization Eclipse (το έχουν διασκευάσει οι Σουηδοί Death Metalers Entombed!), Myopic Void, Raging River Of Fear, Dancing Madly Backwards, Frozen Over αξίζουν να τα ακούσετε.

English:

Repeat slowly and deliberately: Proto-Metal.

You probably don’t know them, which is understandable, since only Sabbath, Zeppelin, Purple, Heep, Tull, Scorpions, U.F.O.—and maybe Gallagher’s personal projects—remain from that era in our generation.

If you’re from an older generation, you might remember Iron Butterfly with their hit In a Gadda Da Vida from the late, how much? 1969? Around there.

At the same time, some guys—Rod Evans, for example—got shown the door by the band that’s been singing since 1967, with three albums already under their belt, and who were almost like Beatles clones back then, called Deep Purple.

The original lineup disbanded. Evans was fired (and replaced by Ian Gillan).

So, Evans, in 1970-71, moved to America. And then, some devilish coincidence, brought him face to face with former members of the "Iron Butterfly," and... BAM!

What is this CD? What am I hearing? Musically, it’s as heavy as Black Sabbath.

So much lyricality, like Uriah Heep—five times more.

Songs like Mesmerization Eclipse (covered by Swedish death metallers Entombed!), Myopic Void, Raging River of Fear, Dancing Madly Backwards, and Frozen Over are worth listening to.

REVIEW: THE MAGNIFICENT – The Magnificent

THE MAGNIFICENT – The Magnificent

Frontiers Records

The Magnificent is a collaborative project featuring vocalist Michael Eriksen (known from Circus Maximus) and guitarist Torsti Spoof (of Leverage). Despite their backgrounds in metal, this album presents a collection of melodic rock and arena anthems. The songwriting team includes members from Leverage, Brother Firetribe, and Circus Maximus, resulting in a polished and well-crafted sound that highlights strong performances.

The album opens with the energetic, Whitesnake-inspired rocker “Holding on to Your Love,” followed by the noteworthy “Cheated by Love,” which bears similarities to the style of Yngwie Malmsteen’s Goran Edman era. Throughout the album, listeners can expect a range of tracks that showcase both power and melody. Notable songs include the emotive power ballad “Angel,” the fast-paced “Memories,” and melodic rockers such as “Satin and Lace,” “Bullets,” and “Tired of Dreaming.”

Overall, The Magnificent demonstrates a high level of production quality and songwriting craftsmanship. It positions Scandinavia as a prominent scene for melodic rock and is a noteworthy addition to the genre’s releases of 2011. While individual preferences may vary, the album’s consistency and quality make it a significant release worth exploring.

REVIEW: GAMMA RAY, Powerplant

GAMMA RAY, Powerplant (1999)

Noise Records

Ό,τι ήταν το Somewhere in Time για τους Iron Maiden, είναι το Powerplant για τους Gamma Ray! Ο μάστορας Kai Hansen έχει ήδη αρχίσει να φλερτάρει με διαστημικά θέματα από το Somewhere Out in Space (προφανές), αλλά και με το δεύτερο project του με τον Piet Sielck, τους Iron Savior. Ακόμη και η διασκευή στο ποπ κομμάτι των Pet Shop Boys, το "It’s A Sin", που τότε χάλασε το άρωμα στους πολύ ευερέθιστους ελιτιστές, είναι μια ωραία πινελιά ανάμεσα στα "Anywhere in the Galaxy", "Razorblade Sigh", "Send Me a Sign", "Strangers in the Night", "Gardens of the Sinner", "Heavy Metal Universe", "Wings of Destiny" (στους στίχους είχε και το "Sad" πριν — οι επιρροές των Priest δε κρύβονται, οι άτιμες), και "Armageddon".

English:

The Power of the Album: Love for Space

For me, this album is a milestone in the discography of the four German lads. Starting with the digital artwork of the CD cover, created by the artist who illustrated Eddie on the covers of Iron Maiden, Mr. Derek Riggs. Fangface, their mascot (who originally appeared on the first two Helloween albums!), is depicted in another dimension somewhere else in the galaxy, in a scene reminiscent of the science fiction film Stargate. Inside, the feel of the compositions with their power metal sound is cosmic, giving the impression of a very subtly conveyed concept. What “Somewhere in Time” was for Iron Maiden, that’s what “Powerplant” is for Gamma Ray! Mastermind Kai Hansen has already begun to flirt with space themes from “Somewhere Out in Space” (obvious), as well as from his second project with Piet Sielck, Iron Savior. Here, he plays the rhythmic parts on guitar and sings the lyrics with a tone of optimism. Dirk Schalchter on bass, Dan Zimmermann on drums, and Henjo Richter on lead guitar, along with various synthesizers used throughout.

Back then, this release somewhat caught us off guard. Nevertheless, it has since become one of their most classic works. Even the cover of the Pet Shop Boys’ pop song “It’s A Sin,” which at the time disturbed the sensitive, elitist purists’ sense of atmosphere, is a nice touch among tracks like “Anywhere in the Galaxy,” “Razorblade Sigh,” “Send Me a Sign,” “Strangers in the Night,” “Gardens of the Sinner,” “Heavy Metal Universe,” “Wings of Destiny” (which previously included the word “Sad” in the lyrics — Priest’s influences are impossible to hide, those sneaky ones), and “Armageddon.”

REVIEW: SCREAMING SHADOWS - Night Keeper

SCREAMING SHADOWS - Night Keeper

Jolly Roger Records

“Night Keeper” is the fourth full-length album from the Italian heavy metal group Screaming Shadows, released via Jolly Roger Records. The band has been active in the metal scene for approximately a decade, and this experience is evident in the album's mature and well-executed sound.

The album presents a blend of technical proficiency and melodic engagement, suggesting a confluence of inherited influences channeled through the band's own distinct perspective. The musical approach on “Night Keeper” combines the enthusiasm often associated with a newer act with the maturity and cohesion expected of a veteran band.

The compositional structure is notably technical, yet the songs maintain accessibility and are characterized by memorable melodies that contribute to overall enjoyability. The release is described as possessing variety and strong musical ideas. A particular highlight mentioned is the track “Free Again” which is noted for its powerful vocal delivery and classic heavy metal composition.

“Night Keeper” showcases a band with the capacity to create compositions that appeal to listeners with extensive experience in the heavy metal genre. The album balances complexity with catchiness, a characteristic often sought after in quality metal releases.

The sustained level of quality across the material suggests that Screaming Shadows possesses the necessary skill to resonate more broadly within the international underground metal community.

This album offers a substantial listening experience for those seeking traditional heavy metal that successfully integrates technical complexity with melodic sensibility. «Night Keeper» is a recommended acquisition for fans looking for a release with longevity that merits extended play.

Theogonia Records Reveals New Album by Temple of Katharsis

From the Greek underground black metal scene, Temple of Katharsis returns with their second album, “Worshipers of the Ancient Necromancy”. This intense record explores forgotten rituals, dark forces, and the mystical worship of death.

Building on their debut, “Macabre Ritual”, the band dives deeper into shadows with a raw, ritualistic sound that blends Greek black metal’s cold atmosphere with Scandinavian sharpness. Lyrically, it explores ancient magic, decay, and forbidden ceremonies, serving as a portal to secret realms beyond time.

Produced with intense craftsmanship, the album’s artwork by Wolf’s Path complements its dark aesthetic. Prepare to bow before forgotten powers—the necromantic rituals have begun.

Leave The Wave Releases New Single "Monster"

Greek band Leave The Wave has unveiled their new song "Monster," taken from their upcoming album "Disturbance." The track was inspired by a real-life case that shocked Greece—a tragic story where a mother murdered her children one by one. The band chose not to mention names or details, focusing instead on the profound themes.

What moved the band was the innocence lost, the betrayal of absolute trust, and the unimaginable darkness that can hide behind a face of love.

Written from the perspective of a child trying to understand what is happening around them, "Monster" explores the fear and confusion of a young mind faced with the betrayal of someone who was supposed to protect them, turning into their greatest nightmare.

REVIEW: ACHELOUS, The Icewind Chronicles

ACHELOUS, The Icewind Chronicles (2022)

No Remorse Records

Και εδώ μέσα ερωτεύεσαι τα “Flames of War”, “Savage King”, “Mithrill Hall”, “The Crystal Shard”, “Face The Storm”, “Outcast” και έτσι σου καρφώνονται στο μυαλό.

English:

As long as they live, we hope.

Another band born and bred of the air of renewal that has been blowing through the local scene for the last fifteen to twenty years, and, four years after their epic Macedon debut, their hit with this CD, I believe, brought about their establishment. Epic yet simultaneously modern Power Metal, with traditional musical elements scattered throughout their compositions, with that feeling of the good old underground sound pouring out, sections featuring melodic female vocals, and with an exemplary production. You can hear influences from Blind Guardian, Crimson Glory, Attack, and Omen, as well as from Warlord, Heavy Load, Savatage, but also some subtle elements from local bands like Marauder, maybe even Phantom Lord and Battle Roar. This album is the first of theirs I noticed, and that's how I was initiated into their world right after the era of the second lockdown—an era as chilling as the album's cover!

Chris Achelous on bass, Christos Kappas on vocals, Vicky Demertzi and George Mavromatis on the twin guitars, and drums by Yiannis Roussis. And within this [album], you fall in love with “Flames of War,” “Savage King,” “Mithrill Hall,” “The Crystal Shard,” “Face The Storm,” and “Outcast,” and they just get stuck in your mind. A truly great hope for the Greek scene, which shows that it is being reborn like a phoenix. And the future for our friends would be even better.
