SINNER, The Nature Of Evil (1998)

Σπουδαία χρονιά το '98 γενικότερα.

Κυκλοφόρησαν τρομερές δισκάρες σε όλο το φάσμα της σκληρής μουσικής, με την Power Metal υποκατηγορία να έχει την τιμητική της. Οι Sinner, με το αφεντικό του σχήματος Matt Sinner σε φωνή και μπάσο (διπλοθεσίτης ήδη από τότε, καθώς είχε αναλάβει παράλληλα και το μπάσο στους Primal Fear του Ralph Scheepers), τους κιθαρίστες Tom Naumann και Alex Beyrodt, τον μυθικής υπόστασης ντράμερ Fritz Randow, που έχει δώσει ρυθμό και στους επίσης μυθικούς progressive rockers Eloy, καθώς και τον πληκτρά Frank Rössler, έχουν εδώ μπει για τα καλά στη φάση.

Αν και το σχήμα ξεκίνησε στις αρχές των '80s με πιο Hard Rock προσανατολισμό, εδώ κυκλοφορεί αυτό το άλμπουμ ως φυσική συνέχεια του εξαιρετικού Judgement Day, δύο χρόνια νωρίτερα.

Το gatefold LP, που είχα αγοράσει λίγους μήνες μετά την κυκλοφορία του είτε από το Rock City στην Ακαδημίας (το είχα «χτίσει» εκείνο το δισκάδικο!) είτε από το παλιό Metal Era, όταν ακόμη ανήκε στον Jim Mutilator, μου είχε κάνει τεράστια εντύπωση.

Οριακό δεκάρι – ή, στην πιο αυστηρή εκδοχή, ένα γεμάτο εννιά στα δέκα. Τα Devil's River, A Question Of Honour, Justice From Hell, The Nature Of Evil, Some Truth (Has Better Left Unknown), Faith And Conviction, Rising και Trust No One αποτελούν τα βασικά σημεία αναφοράς ενός πραγματικά σπουδαίου δίσκου. Και σαν επισφράγισμα έρχεται η διασκευάρα στο The Sun Goes Down των Thin Lizzy.

Μαζί με αυτά, τα Calm Before The Storm και Searching For Your Love από το bonus CD της πρώτης έκδοσης κρίνονται επίσης πολύ τίμια κομμάτια και συμπληρώνουν ιδανικά ένα από τα καλύτερα άλμπουμ της περιόδου.

1998 was a remarkable year for heavy music in general.

Outstanding albums were released across the entire spectrum of hard music, with Power Metal enjoying one of its strongest periods. Sinner, led by Matt Sinner on vocals and bass (already pulling double duty at the time, having also taken over bass duties in Ralph Scheepers' Primal Fear), alongside guitarists Tom Naumann and Alex Beyrodt, legendary drummer Fritz Randow—whose unmistakable sense of rhythm had also powered the equally legendary progressive rock band Eloy—and keyboardist Frank Rössler, were firing on all cylinders here.

Although the band had emerged in the early '80s with a more Hard Rock-oriented sound, this album arrived as the natural continuation of the excellent Judgement Day, released two years earlier.

I bought the gatefold LP a few months after its release, either from Rock City on Akademias Street (I practically lived in that record store!) or from the old Metal Era, back when it was still owned by Jim Mutilator. Whichever it was, the album left an enormous impression on me.

This is a borderline perfect record—either a full 10/10 or, if you're feeling particularly strict, a solid 9/10. Devil's River, A Question Of Honour, Justice From Hell, The Nature Of Evil, Some Truth (Has Better Left Unknown), Faith And Conviction, Rising, and Trust No One stand out as the album's defining moments. To top it all off, the outstanding cover of Thin Lizzy's The Sun Goes Down provides the perfect closing statement.

The bonus CD included with the original edition also featured Calm Before The Storm and Searching For Your Love, two more than worthy tracks that complete what remains one of the finest albums of its era.
