Κάποιοι λένε παρακμή, κάποιοι άλλοι είναι της ίδιας άποψης. 

Η αλήθεια δεν βρίσκεται πουθενά, ή μάλλον, κάπου στη μέση.

Μετά το σχεδόν σόλο άλμπουμ του David DeFeis, «Visions of Eden», το συγκρότημα με πυρήνα τον τραγουδιστή, πληκτρά, πιανίστα και μπασίστα DeFeis, φυσικά, και τον Edward Pursino στην ηλεκτρική κιθάρα, έχοντας ακόμη τους Josh Block σε επτάχορδες κιθάρες και τον Frank Gilchriest στα τύμπανα, μας έδωσε αυτό εδώ το "ρομαντικό βαρβαρικό" μέταλ άλμπουμ. 

Με το καλημέρα παρατηρούμε κάτι που στο «Visions of Eden» υπήρχε, μεν, αλλά όχι σε τέτοια απόδοση. Η φωνή του David είναι πολύ υποταγμένη στις χαμηλές νότες. 

Θέλετε από άποψη, θέλετε από... άλλο λόγο, το εναρκτήριο «By the Hammer of Zeus (And the Wrecking Ball of Thor)» —ας ενημερώσει κάποιος τον στιχουργό ότι ο Ζεύς κεραυνό κραδαίνει— ακούγεται μεν μια χαρά, αλλά η φωνή, ρε παιδί μου, υστερεί σε σχέση με όσα θυμόμαστε από άλλες εποχές. 

ΟΚ, τα χρόνια πέρασαν, δεν περιμένουμε να μας δώσουν δεύτερο «Noble Savage» ή τρίτο «Marriage of Heaven and Hell», έστω και το «Invictus». 

Ο δίσκος κινείται σε λογικά πλαίσια για το σχήμα, γενικά, και αν αυτό δεν σας καλύπτει, ανήκετε στην πρώτη κατηγορία του τίτλου της επικεφαλίδας· αν σας καλύπτει, τότε στη δεύτερη.

 

Τα τραγούδια «Pagan Heart», «The Bread of Wickedness», «In A Dream Of Fire», το έντεκα λεπτών «To Crown Them with Halos» (μέρη 1 & 2), «Eternal Regret», «Silent Sorrow» είναι κοντά στα ίδια. 

Ειδική μνεία αξίζει στο έπος τριάντα λεπτών (ξεπέρασαν τους Manowar!) «From a Whisper to a Scream», που κλείνει το δεύτερο CD και χρειάζεται ιδιαίτερο θάρρος να το ακούσεις ολόκληρο! 

Τελικά, μάλλον κλίνω στη μέση των δύο προτάσεων της επικεφαλίδας!

Some say decline; others believe it’s more of the same.

 

The truth is nowhere to be found—or rather, it's somewhere in the middle. 

After David DeFeis’s nearly solo album, “Visions of Eden”, the band—with core members vocalist, keyboardist, pianist, and bassist DeFeis himself, of course, and Edward Pursino on electric guitar, along with Josh Block on seven-string guitars and Frank Gilchriest on drums—delivered this "romantic barbaric" metal album.

 

Right from the start, we notice something that was present, yes, but not in such a form, on “Visions of Eden”. David’s voice is very subdued in the lower notes. 

Whether from an artistic choice or... some other reason, the opening track, “By the Hammer of Zeus (And the Wrecking Ball of Thor)”—someone should tell the lyricist that Zeus wields thunder—sounds great, but, honestly, his voice falls a bit short compared to what we remember from other times. 

Okay, the years have passed; we don’t expect a second “Noble Savage” or a third “Marriage of Heaven and Hell”, not even “Invictus”.

 

Overall, the album stays within reasonable boundaries for the band, and if it doesn’t satisfy you, you belong to the first category of the headline; if it does, then to the second. 

Songs like “Pagan Heart”, “The Bread of Wickedness”, “In A Dream Of Fire”, the eleven-minute “To Crown Them with Halos” (parts 1 & 2), “Eternal Regret”, and “Silent Sorrow” are all quite similar in tone. 

A special mention goes to the thirty-minute epic (surpassing Manowar!) “From a Whisper to a Scream”, which closes the second CD and requires a lot of courage to listen to in its entirety! 

Ultimately, I lean toward the middle ground of the two options in the headline!
