Να χαρώ τον μάστορα!

Με τίτλο σαν "Τέτοια εργαλειοθήκη", δεν μπορεί παρά να κρύβει πολλά ο δίσκος του Ian Gillan, που τότε, για δεύτερη φορά, είχε απολυθεί (μόνο για τέσσερα χρόνια, όπως έδειξε η ιστορία) από τους Deep Purple και τον Ritchie Blackmore. Ένα άλμπουμ ώριμο, που δε θυμίζει σε πολλά τα πρώτα του βήματα με τους Ian Gillan Band στα μέσα της δεκαετίας του ’70 (όταν είχε δει για πρώτη φορά τη κόκκινη κάρτα των μωβ!), και είναι αρκετά βαρύ και κιθαριστικά.

 

Με όχι μόνο τις χαρακτηριστικές στριγγλιές του, που θυμίζουν το ένδοξο παρελθόν, ο Gillan αποδεικνύει ότι μπορεί πάντα να γράφει και να ερμηνεύει άνετα, με πάθος που δε μας είχε συνηθίσει, τουλάχιστον στο τελευταίο του, πριν πέντε χρόνια, με τους μωβ δίσκους. 

Hard Rock της δεκαετίας του ’90, με τη χαρακτηριστική – πλέον κάπως βραχνή από την εποχή του "Born Again" δίσκου του με τους Black Sabbath, εννιά χρόνια πριν – φωνή ενός δεινοσαύρου rock star ερμηνευτή. 

Δυνατά σημεία είναι το έντονο και γρήγορο "Candy Horizon", τα "Hang Me Out To Dry", "Toolbox", "Don’t Hold Me Back", το επίσης βαρύ και γρήγορο "Pictures of Hell", το "Bed of Nails" (που δεν έχει καμία σχέση με το ομότιτλο του Alice Cooper), το "Gassed Up", το "Everything I Need" — σε ένα από τα καλύτερα σόλο άλμπουμ του όλων των εποχών, που μάλλον δε θα έχετε ακούσει, χάνοντας πολλά!

With a title like "Such a Toolbox," the album undoubtedly hides a lot. Ian Gillan’s record, at that time, for the second time, had been dismissed (only for four years, as history shows) from Deep Purple and Ritchie Blackmore. 

It's a mature album that, in many ways, doesn't resemble his early days with the Ian Gillan Band in the mid-1970s (when he first saw the purple card!), and it’s quite heavy and guitar-driven. 

Not only does it feature his characteristic screams, reminiscent of his glorious past, but Gillan also proves that he can always write and perform comfortably, with a passion he hadn’t shown us, at least not in his last works from five years ago with the Purple albums. 

This is hard rock from the 1990s, with his now somewhat huskier voice—partly due to the "Born Again" album he recorded with Black Sabbath nine years earlier—a voice of a dinosaur rock star performer.

 

Standout tracks include the intense and fast "Candy Horizon," the songs "Hang Me Out To Dry," "Toolbox," "Don’t Hold Me Back," the also heavy and fast "Pictures of Hell," the track "Bed of Nails" (which has nothing to do with the one by Alice Cooper), "Gassed Up," and "Everything I Need"—one of the best solo albums of all time, which you probably haven't heard, and you're missing out on a lot!
