Οι Θεσσαλονικείς Vavel, μία από τις πρωτοπόρες μπάντες της ελληνικής Heavy Metal στη δεκαετία του ’80, είχαν κυκλοφορήσει το πρώτο τους άλμπουμ το 1986, κατακτώντας την ιδιαίτερη τιμή να είναι από τις πρώτες (μαζί φυσικά με τους Spitfire από την Αθήνα και τους συντοπίτες τους Northwind) που κατάφεραν να έχουν δισκογραφία τότε. Το 1988 μπήκαν στα Rock Studio της πόλης του βορρά και ηχογράφησαν τον δεύτερο δίσκο τους, το Unity... αυτόν που βλέπετε εδώ! Μόνο που η μοίρα του άλμπουμ ήταν διαφορετική. Μπήκε στο ράφι (αν όχι σε κάποιο υπόγειο) για δεκαπέντε χρόνια, και με τον νέο τίτλο βγήκε από τη θρυλική Unisound, με αυτό το εξώφυλλο. Τι θα ακούσει κανείς στα οκτώ κομμάτια του CD; Παλιακό, μελωδικό Heavy Metal με ιδιαίτερη χρήση πλήκτρων και με συναίσθημα αθωότητας που φέρνει στον νου τις εποχές που η ντόπια σκηνή, όντας ακόμη… ανύπαρκτη, προσπαθούσε να βγει στον κόσμο. Με τα tracks Just For Rock, Confusion, The Second Death, United, Lies In Your Eyes, το άλμπουμ αυτό πραγματικά σε κρατάει, ας είναι και “φλατ” η παραγωγή ήχου από το ίδιο το συγκρότημα, καθώς η μίξη είναι καθαρά αναλογική, κατάλληλη για βινύλιο. Αναμνήσεις μιας ιστορίας που χάθηκε στο χρόνο.

Lost in Transition

The Thessaloniki-based Vavel, one of the pioneering bands of Greek Heavy Metal in the 1980s, released their first album in 1986, earning the distinction of being one of the first (alongside Athens’ Spitfire and their fellow Thessalonians Northwind) to have a record deal at the time. In 1988, they entered Rock Studio in the city of the North and recorded their second album, Unity... the very one you see here! However, the fate of this album was different. It was shelved (if not stored in some basement) for fifteen years, and under a new title, it was released by the legendary Unisound label, with this cover art. What can you expect from the eight tracks on this CD? Old-school, melodic Heavy Metal with a distinct use of keyboards and a sense of innocence reminiscent of the days when the local scene, still… non-existent, was trying to break into the world. With tracks like Just For Rock, Confusion, The Second Death, United, Lies In Your Eyes, this album truly captivates, even if the production is “flat” and handled by the band itself, as the mixing is purely analog, suitable for vinyl. Memories of a story that was lost in time.
