SANCTUAIRE – L’empreinte de Lucifer

Finding contemporary bands that offer a distinctive and recognizable sound can be challenging. While originality in the context of metal does not necessarily mean reinventing the genre, having a unique identity that sets a band apart is valuable. SANCTUAIRE, a French heavy metal band, exemplifies this with a sound that is both rooted in traditional influences and distinctly their own.

Their style can be broadly categorized as classic heavy metal with strong influences from the 1980s. The band interprets these influences through their own lens, resulting in a dark, atmospheric tone that evokes the mood of bands like MERCYFUL FATE and early ADX. Additionally, the raw production quality echoes the sound of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM), as well as bands like EXCITER, further emphasizing their retro aesthetic.

A notable aspect of SANCTUAIRE’s music is the dark, horror-inspired atmosphere that pervades their compositions. This mood is enhanced by their choice to perform lyrics in French, which contributes to a sense of authenticity and immersion—comparable to the cinematic experience of European horror films.

Overall, "L’empreinte de Lucifer" presents a challenging listen, characterized by its dark and somewhat “bizarre” approach to traditional metal. While it may not appeal to all listeners, those interested in exploring a heavy metal sound that balances familiarity with a unique atmospheric twist may find this album worth their attention.
