Αλήθεια η περίοδος των 80s υπήρξε ιδιαίτερα προβληματική για το δεινοσαυρικό συγκρότημα που έλαμψε δέκα χρόνια πρίν. Η διαρκής αναζήτηση δεύτερου κιθαρίστα που θα μπορούσε να σταθεί στη θέση του Ace Frehley ήταν ένας ιδιαίτερος αγώνας δρόμου. Ο προβληματικός Vinnie Vincent ήρθε το '82 κι έμεινε μόνο ενάμιση χρόνο στο στρατόπεδο τους. Ο επίσης προσωρινός Reed St. Mark για την ηχογράφηση του προηγούμενου έτους Animalize δε κράτησε ως την περιοδεία όπου ήρθε ο κύριος Bruce Kulick κι έμεινε επιτέλους και για τα επόμενα πέντε στούντιο άλμπουμ ως τα μέσα της επόμενης δεκαετίας. Εδώ παρέα με τα ιδρυτικά μέλη Gene Simmons μπάσο και φωνή, Paul Stanley κιθάρα και φωνή και τον λιλιπούτειο σε ανάστημα αλλά τεράστιο "παιχτικά"  ντράμερ, τον αδικοχαμένο Eric Carr έχουμε ένα απ'καλύτερα άλμπουμ της δεύτερης αυτής Glam Rock εποχής τους. Το Asylum διορθώνει τα όποια κενά υπήρχαν στο Animalize και το θεωρώ ισάξιο με το Lick it Up του '83,  ίσως και λίγο καλύτερο από άποψη παραγωγής και συνθέσεων. Γρήγορο και νευρικό Hard & Heavy που οι νέοι σταρ της εποχής Motley Crue, Ratt, White Lion, Warrant θα ήθελαν πάρα πολύ να μπορούσαν να πλησιάσουν! Τα King of the Mountain, Who Wants to be Lonely, Trial by Fire, I 'm Alive, Love's a Deadly Weapon, η μεγάλη power ballad εδώ κι επιτυχία ραδιοφωνικά Tears are Falling και το Radar for Love είναι πολύ τίμια, δεδομένης της εποχής τους κομμάτια.

Unexpectedly heavy.

Indeed, the 1980s were particularly challenging for the dinosaur band that had shone a decade earlier. The ongoing quest for a second guitarist capable of stepping into Ace Frehley's shoes was quite a struggle. The troubled Vinnie Vincent joined in '82 but only lasted a year and a half in their camp. The also temporary Reed St. Mark for the recording of the previous year’s Animalize didn’t last through the tour, leading to the arrival of the one and only Bruce Kulick, who would finally remain with them for the next five studio albums until the mid-'90s. Here, alongside founding members Gene Simmons on bass and vocals, Paul Stanley on guitar and vocals, and the diminutive yet immensely talented drummer, the late Eric Carr, we have one of the best albums from this second Glam Rock era. Asylum fills the gaps that existed in Animalize and I consider it on par with Lick It Up from '83, perhaps even slightly better in terms of production and songwriting. It's a fast and edgy Hard & Heavy album that the new stars of the time, like Mötley Crüe, Ratt, White Lion, and Warrant, would have greatly wanted to emulate! Tracks like "King of the Mountain," "Who Wants to be Lonely," "Trial by Fire," "I’m Alive," "Love's a Deadly Weapon," the major power ballad and radio hit "Tears Are Falling," and "Radar for Love" are all quite respectable, considering their era.
