REVIEW: IRONWARE – Break Out

IRONWARE – Break Out

Limb Music

Back in the day, ordering a band's release was a far simpler affair—there were no platforms like Discogs, Bandcamp, or PayPal. Instead, you would stuff cash into an envelope and mail it off to the band, hoping they'd send you their music in return. That’s how I stumbled upon the Swedish group IRONWARE in 2000 and decided to order their EP, "Return of the King." It had a raw energy and promise that made me excited about their future.

Fast forward three years, and they released their debut and only full-length album, "Break Out," through Limb Music. This label was known for delivering some solid power metal and classic heavy metal releases at the time, so my expectations were high.

"Break Out" dives into the European power metal scene but with a more aggressive edge. It’s packed with dynamic riffs and catchy melodies that really make each track stand out, paired with a tight rhythm section. Pasi Humppi’s vocals bring a kind of intensity and epic flair that reminds me of legends like Hansi Kürsch and Piet Sielck. They also share musical traits with bands like BLIND GUARDIAN, IRON SAVIOR, and GAMMA RAY.

This album was a fantastic entry for its genre, and it felt like the debut of a band with great potential. It’s bittersweet to think it turned out to be their only release—it really seemed like they had a bright future ahead of them…
