Και όχι, δεν είναι οι Beatles στη φωτογραφία. 

Παλαιό Rock and Roll από τη δεκαετία του '60; Μέλη με μαλλί "τούφα", όπως προστάζει η εποχή εκείνη; Πάντως, όσο κι εάν φαίνεται αρχαιολογικό εύρημα, ο πρώτος δίσκος αυτού του συγκροτήματος δεινόσαυρου στη σύγχρονη Rock ιστορία είναι αυτός εδώ. Προσωπικά, για μένα σημαίνει και ταξίδι στον δικό μου παρελθόν, αφού μου είχε δώσει τις αυθεντικές κασέτες των τριών πρώτων άλμπουμ ο συμμαθητής Γιώργος τότε (παλιά...) το 1994 στο γυμνάσιο. Με τους Mk.1 Deep Purple έχω άριστη μουσική σχέση. Μάλιστα, το ντεμπούτο αυτό το συμπαθώ πάρα πολύ και σήμερα, ακόμα κι αν πολλά χρόνια έχω να το βάλω να ρολλάρει στο CD player του στερεοφωνικού. 

Το ορχηστρικό "And The Address", που ακολουθεί, συνεχίζει την κλασική διασκευή στον Joe South με το διαχρονικό "Hush". Η σκοτεινή σουίτα "Prelude: Happiness / I'm So Glad", γραμμένη στο Hammond ηλεκτρικό πιάνο από τον έκτοτε πάντα μυστακοφόρο John Lord, θεωρώ ότι είναι η κορυφαία στιγμή του άλμπουμ. 

Το "Mandrake Root" είναι επίσης μια άλλη κλασική στιγμή. Μάλιστα, ο δίσκος περιλαμβάνει συνολικά τρεις διασκευές, αφού υπάρχουν και το "Help" των Beatles και το "Hey Joe" του τεράστιου Jimi Hendrix! Όχι, δεν ήταν έλλειψη έμπνευσης· απλώς, θυμίζω ότι τότε δεν υπήρχαν σαφείς περιορισμοί σχετικά με τα πνευματικά δικαιώματα, οπότε, αφού τα έπαιζαν ζωντανά, τα ηχογράφησαν κιόλας.

 

Στα bonus της κυκλοφορίας υπάρχει και ένα χαμένο διαμάντι, το "Shadows", ανάμεσα σε ζωντανές εκτελέσεις και διαφορετικά mixes κάποιων κομματιών του δίσκου. 

Γενικά, η Rod Evans είχε φωνάρα τότε (καλά και αργότερα στους Captain Beyond, κεντάει, αλλά εδώ φαίνεται περισσότερο!). Ο Ritchie Blackmore δεν θα λάμψει ακόμα κιθαριστικά, αλλά σύντομα έρχεται η ανατολή του αστέρα του, και το ταξίδι στην εποχή είναι σαν ένα μουσικό ψυχοτρόπο σκεύασμα.

Old-school Rock and Roll from the 1960s? Band members with "mop-top" hair, just like the era demanded? Still, no matter how archaeological it might seem, the very first record by this dinosaur band in modern rock history is right here. Personally, for me, it also represents a journey back to my own past, since my classmate Giorgos gave me the authentic tapes of their first three albums back in the day (way back...) in 1994 during high school. I have an excellent musical connection with Mk.1 Deep Purple. In fact, I still really like this debut even today, even though it's been many years since I last played it on the stereo's CD player. 

The instrumental "And The Address" that follows continues the classic cover of Joe South's timeless "Hush." The dark suite "Prelude: Happiness / I'm So Glad," written on the Hammond electric piano by John Lord, who has always had a mustache, I believe is the highlight of the album. 

"Mandrake Root" is also another classic moment. In fact, the album includes a total of three covers, including The Beatles' "Help" and Jimi Hendrix's "Hey Joe." No, it wasn’t a lack of inspiration—just a reminder that back then, there weren’t clear restrictions regarding copyright laws, so since they played these live, they recorded them too. 

In the bonus tracks of the release, there’s also a hidden gem: the song "Shadows," among live performances and different mixes of some tracks from the album. 

Overall, Rod Evans had an incredible voice back then (and he still shines with Captain Beyond, but here it’s even more noticeable!). Ritchie Blackmore wouldn’t yet shine as a guitarist, but his star was about to rise, and the journey into that era feels like a musical psychoactive trip.
