SILVERBONES - Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea review

SILVERBONES - Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea
Demo 2014
SILVERBONES is a young band from Italy and I don’t mean the age of the band members. I say this because the band was formed somewhere in January 2013 in Italy and the purpose of its creation is to play traditional heavy metal music with medieval melodies and lyrics inspired by the life of the pirates. Almost a year after its formation, SILVERBONES have composed their first songs which were included in this demo somewhere in the midst of December 2014. So let us see what SILVERBONES have to offer to the listener (please grab a bottle of rum while you read this).
THE COVER: I think this is the kind of cover that I would expect to see from a band that plays heavy metal and which draws inspiration from the pirate life. The cover depicts crossbones above a sea. It is simple enough and yet straight to the point. It is the flag (though many historians believe that every pirate had a different kind of flag and crossbones are more a legacy that Hollywood movies left to us) that spread fear in the Caribbean, but also joy if you are a pirate or a metalhead….
MUSICAL STYLE: The band claims that its intention is to combine heavy metal music with pirate/medieval melodies. I don’t know how the pirate melodies sound, but I think that the band succeeds in that since they create a sound that makes you travel back in time. It is like watching a pirate movie and yet it has all the elements of traditional heavy metal that makes you want to grab your guitar or air guitar and play along and even sing along with the band.
COMPOSITIONS: In this demo you will have the pleasure to listen to the 4 first tracks of the band. This is their first release and of course they can’t avoid showing their influences which I think you can guess. Yes my friends, RUNNING WILD is a strong influence for the band, but they do also have some N.W.O.B.H.M. elements in their sound which mainly come straight from IRON MAIDEN. This might not sound original to you, but the main point when you listen to music or see a movie is to enjoy it and be left with a sense of fulfillment. So, SILVERBONES are influenced, but they do not copy and above all they have catchy melodies and riffs that make you listen to these compositions again and again.
CONCLUSION: Every story has an end and here is where my presentation ends, but I hope that the story of SILVERBONES only begins here with this demo, because they are a well bonded and talented band of musicians who have true love for heavy metal and pirates and they manage to reflect these elements on their compositions. Check them out and keep drinking rum…
