EXCITER, Thrash Speed Burn (2008)

Ανελέητα ψηλόβραχνα φωνητικά, ταχύτατα κιθαριστικά riff, ρεφραίν που σου κολλάνε στο μυαλό, ρυθμικός τομέας ατμομηχανή σε επιτάχυνση και τίτλοι σαν το ομώνυμο Thrash Speed Burn, Massacre Mountain, In Mortal Fear, Crusifiction, Demon's Gate, Evil Οmen, Betrayal, The Punisher να δικαιώνουν το όνομα της -σχεδόν- πρώτης παγκόσμια Thrash/Speed μπάντας που είχαν απ' ο 1983.

You see the title and understand the content.

The Canadian protagonists of the fast metal sound, whether Speed or Thrash Metal, find themselves at the indistinct border of the two Siamese brother genres (the "Bonded by Blood" cover by Exodus says it all!) and have been experiencing a resurgence since the late 1990s. This revitalization has led them to pour their heart and soul into quality albums like this CD. With relentless high-pitched vocals, lightning-fast guitar riffs, choruses that stick in your mind, and a rhythmic section that's a steam engine in full throttle, tracks like the self-titled "Thrash Speed Burn," "Massacre Mountain," "In Mortal Fear," "Crucifixion," "Demon's Gate," "Evil Omen," "Betrayal," and "The Punisher" justify their status as one of the -almost- first global Thrash/Speed bands since 1983.

REVIEW: K.K's PRIEST, Sermons Of The Sinner (2021)

K.K's PRIEST, Sermons Of The Sinner (2021)

EX1 Records

Ο K.K. Το νέο συγκρότημα των δικών του Priest περιλαμβάνει καταρχήν τον Tim Owens τον αγαπητό μας Ripper που πέρασε απ' τους αρχικούς Judas Priest απ' το Jugulator (1997) ως και το Live in London πριν την επιστροφή του Halford. Με σίγουρες επιτυχίες τα Hellfire Thunderbolt, Sermon of the Sinner, Raise your Firts, Brothers of the Road Wild and Free, Hail for the Priest και Return of the Sentinel ο δίσκος είναι αυτόματα κλασικός.

Metal Defection

K.K. Downing, co-founder of Judas Priest and one-half of the legendary guitar duo with Glenn Tipton on all the albums of the metal gods from “Rocka Rolla” (1974) to “Nostradamus” (2008), needs no introduction. Many said he should have stayed with the band at all costs when, around 2011-12, he announced that for personal reasons, he would be stepping down from his role as guitarist and retiring from music altogether. He ventured into other business activities in the U.S., which ultimately didn’t turn out well. As the wise saying goes, "Learn a trade and keep it," and that’s exactly what he did.

His new band, featuring members of his former Priest, includes none other than Tim "Ripper" Owens, our beloved singer who joined Judas Priest from “Jugulator” (1997) through “Live in London” before Halford’s return. The recipe for success was already there, and this is their first album, which took us by surprise at the time and became the rival force to “Firepower” (2018), the album by his old bandmates.

With guaranteed hits like "Hellfire Thunderbolt," "Sermon of the Sinner," "Raise Your Fists," "Brothers of the Road," "Wild and Free," "Hail for the Priest," and "Return of the Sentinel," this album instantly became a classic.

3. “Liquid Of The Kings”: This track has a regal and epic feel, with lyrics that speak of ancient battles and the quest for glory. The imagery of kings and warriors is vividly portrayed.

4. “I Will Come Again”: A song about resilience and determination, "I Will Come Again" is an anthem of perseverance. The lyrics inspire a sense of hope and the will to overcome obstacles.

5. “Welcome To The Real”: This track offers a critique of modern society, urging listeners to see beyond illusions and face reality. The lyrics are thought-provoking and challenge the status quo.

6. “The Last Song”: A reflective and melancholic piece, "The Last Song" contemplates the end of an era or a relationship. The lyrics are introspective and filled with a sense of finality.

7. “Another Time”: This song explores themes of regret and the desire to turn back time. The lyrics convey a sense of nostalgia and the wish to correct past mistakes.

8. “Feed The Fire”: An energetic and fiery track, "Feed The Fire" is about passion and drive. The lyrics encourage listeners to pursue their dreams with intensity and fervor.

"Tools Of Destruction" is a testament to Thunderstone's ability to create a multifaceted and emotionally rich album. The band's skillful combination of traditional power metal elements with influences from iconic bands, along with Pasi Rantanen's exceptional vocals, makes this album a standout in the genre. Reflecting on the album now, it is clear that it offers a detailed and mature listening experience that resonates on many levels.

REVIEW: YOTH IRIA, Under His Sway E.P. (2021)

YOTH IRIA, Under His Sway E.P. (2021)

Pagan Records

Τα τέσσερα κομμάτια εδώ, Under His Sway , Sid- El- Djinn , η επανεκτέλεση του Visions Of The Dead Lovers των Rotting Christ απ' την εποχή που τα δύο βασικά μέλη των Yoth Iria ήταν εκεί κι η έκδοση 7'' E.P.

English:

A precursor in small doses.

The debut mini-album of the Greek supergroup in extreme sound, featuring The Magus and Jim Mutilator, made the best impression at the time. The four tracks here, 'Under His Sway,' 'Sid-El-Djinn,' the re-recording of Rotting Christ's 'Visions of the Dead Lovers' from the era when the two core members of Yoth Iria were part of the band, and the 7'' E.P. version of the incredible 'The Red Crown Turns Black' from their debut full-length album, are truly the best introduction to the essence of what was to follow."

"The Terrible One" by Grave Digger

Grave Digger’s “Liberty or Death” album (2007) brings to life key historical figures and events, and one of its standout tracks is "The Terrible One." This song is based on the infamous Russian ruler, Ivan IV, better known as Ivan the Terrible. Known for both his achievements and brutality, Ivan IV's legacy is a mix of accomplishments in centralizing and expanding Russia, as well as extreme violence and oppression.

The Song: Dark Power in Music and Lyrics

Grave Digger uses a heavy, aggressive musical style in "The Terrible One" to reflect the fear and brutality associated with Ivan IV. The pounding riffs and dark tone set the stage for the song’s portrayal of a ruler who wielded power without mercy.

The lyrics focus on Ivan’s iron-fisted control and ruthless elimination of enemies. Lines like "He is the hammer, they are the nail" emphasize Ivan’s unforgiving dominance over those who opposed him. The song taps into the terror that Ivan evoked, as he systematically crushed resistance and instilled fear across Russia.

Ivan IV: The Achievements and Horrors of His Rule

Achievements: Strengthening and Expanding Russia

1. Centralization of Power: Ivan IV was the first ruler to be crowned Tsar of All Russia in 1547. By consolidating power, he ended the dominance of the boyars (nobility) and created a stronger, more centralized state. This brought stability to Russia after years of political infighting.

2. Military Expansion: Ivan expanded Russian territory by defeating the Kazan and Astrakhan Khanates, securing control over the Volga River. These victories allowed for further expansion into Siberia, helping Russia grow into a vast empire.

3. Legal and Administrative Reforms:Ivan’s Sudebnik of 1550, a new legal code, helped modernize Russia's legal and administrative systems. He also established a standing army, the “streltsy”, improving military efficiency. His reforms laid the groundwork for future Russian governance.

Brutality: Tyranny and Terror

1. The Oprichnina: In 1565, Ivan created the “Oprichnina”, a policy that divided Russia into two parts—one under his direct control and another for the boyars. His personal guard, the “Oprichniki”, were given free rein to terrorize, torture, and kill those suspected of disloyalty. This led to widespread fear, suffering, and the destruction of entire regions.

2. The Massacre of Novgorod: Ivan’s paranoia reached its peak in 1570, when he accused the city of Novgorod of treason. In response, he ordered a brutal purge, resulting in the slaughter of thousands of its residents. The massacre remains one of the darkest moments of his reign.

3. Personal Tragedy and Mental Decline: Ivan’s mental state deteriorated in his later years. In 1581, during a violent argument, he killed his own son and heir, Ivan Ivanovich. This personal tragedy further destabilized his rule, and his growing paranoia made him increasingly erratic and cruel until his death in 1584.

Ivan IV’s Legacy: A Ruler of Contrasts

Ivan IV’s reign is defined by contrasts. On one hand, he was a visionary ruler who expanded and centralized Russia, solidifying its status as a growing empire. On the other hand, his use of terror, mass killings, and paranoia made his rule one of the most brutal in Russian history.

Grave Digger’s "The Terrible One" focuses on the darker side of Ivan’s legacy, portraying him as a tyrant who ruled through fear and violence. The song captures the essence of Ivan’s reign, emphasizing the suffering he caused and the terror he inspired in both his enemies and his own people.

Conclusion

Grave Digger’s "The Terrible One" is a powerful musical representation of Ivan the Terrible’s legacy. Through crushing riffs and intense lyrics, the band highlights the fear and brutality of Ivan IV’s reign while also acknowledging his role in shaping Russian history. Ivan remains a figure of both accomplishment and horror—a ruler whose vision was matched only by his capacity for cruelty.

In the end, "The Terrible One" and the story of Ivan the Terrible remind us of the high cost of absolute power and the fine line between leadership and tyranny.
