REVIEW: SINNER - One Bullet Left

SINNER - One Bullet Left

AFM Records

Mat Sinner's standing in the heavy metal scene is beyond dispute. His consistent quality, whether with SINNER, PRIMAL FEAR, or his many collaborations, has rightfully earned him a revered reputation. However, even the most prolific artists can miss the mark sometimes. Such is the case with SINNER's 2011 release, "One Bullet Left". While it might edge out its immediate predecessor, it falls considerably short of the band's iconic 80s and 90s output.

A notable aspect of "One Bullet Left," continuing a trend from their previous album, is the pronounced lean towards their hard rock origins rather than their heavier metal inclinations. While bands are certainly free to evolve their sound, as a listener, my preference leans heavily towards SINNER's more heavy metal-driven material. This stylistic pivot, though a valid artistic choice for the band, seems to dilute the album's overall impact. The tracks, while competently executed, often lack the raw power, intricate melodies, or sheer inspiration that truly define a standout heavy metal record.

To be clear, the songs on "One Bullet Left" aren't "bad." They're well-performed and professionally produced. Yet, they tend to drift into a "relaxing" and "typical" space for the genre, failing to ignite the kind of excitement or leave a lasting impression one expects from a band of SINNER's caliber. The album offers a pleasant listen, but there's nothing here that compels an immediate replay. For those familiar with SINNER's extensive discography, there are simply far more compelling releases that provide a richer and more memorable experience.

Ultimately, "One Bullet Left" isn't likely to disappoint long-time SINNER fans, but it's equally unlikely to spark any overwhelming enthusiasm. For anyone new to the band, my strong advice would be to start with their earlier, more definitive works. The true essence of SINNER's prowess, in my opinion, lies in their 80s and late 90s releases. Those albums offer a far more representative and rewarding introduction to this respected heavy metal powerhouse.
