Black Widow Records
This band is actually the
history of the hard rock and heavy metal music. What do I mean? We all know
BLACK SABBATH, DEEP PURPLE and URIA HEEP, but in the same era there were also
bands in other countries like Italy (from where SPETTRI are) that moved on the
same sound. SPETTRI for example where formed in 1964. In 1972 they managed to
release an album which was poorly produced and for that reason never got the
attention it was worth. However in 2011 Black Widow Records re – released it
and because of the interest that it drew they have also released the continuation
of this album which is the one that I will present to you here.
THE COVER: It is a dark and
gloomy cover I have to say and fits very well with the whole atmosphere of this
album and of course the concept story that unfolds with the tracks that are included
here. In the right corner you can see a human skull and a human figure walking
on a road and on the left a demonic structure or being made of flesh, bones and
wings. The cover holds a lot of details and I am sure that all of them have
something to do with the lyrics. The artist really did a good work and managed
to depict the sound of SPETTRI on this painting.
MUSICAL STYLE: This is the sophomore album of the band that comes 43
years after their debut album. As we say here in Greece good things take time.
The first thing that I have noticed in this release is the feeling of the 70’s
that the band manages to keep in this contemporary release. This means that the
basis of the sound is of course the 70’s hard rock and heavy metal music, but
there is a mood of experimentation and exploration here. So next to the DEEP
PURPLE, BLACK SABBATH and URIAH HEEP oriented riffs you will find references to
jazz music and progressive and psychedelic rock. All these elements create a
musical amalgam that gives a dark and yet travelling mood to the album that is
consistent to the concept story that unfolds here. It is, by the way, an
esoteric journey of a person to find out his true self and also a study on
human nature.
CONCLUSION: This is not an easy listening release and I think that
SPETTRI intended to create an album that demands the full concentration of the
listener in order to comprehend this album. It is a musical journey though that
will pay you back and make you think a few things about us. The fans of 70’s
hard and progressive rock must check it out.
